Ravenswood, W.Va. -

A North Carolina man was arrested in Ravenswood last Thursday after a routine traffic stop allegedly uncovered a large quantity of prescription drugs in his possession.

Gene Alan Oxendine, 23, of Pembroke, NC, faces one felony count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver in Magistrate Court.

According to the complaint filed by Patrolman D.G. Prechtl of the Ravenswood PD, last Thursday he stopped a Blue Honda with North Carolina plates on Route 2 for several traffic violations.

While speaking with the driver, Oxendine, Prechtl said that both he and the other passenger in the vehicle appeared very nervous.  Prechtl then asked if there were any weapons in the car, to which Oxendine allegedly replied that he had a pistol for which he did not have a permit.

Based on that information, Prechtl, assisted by Patrolman Michael Cummings, secured the vehicles occupants and allegedly recovered a 9mm pistol between the driver’s seat and console.

The search also allegedly turned up a prescription bottle containing 47 and a half 2mg Xanax pills.  Xanax is classfied as a Schedule IV controlled substance.  The name on the prescription bottle did not match either Oxendine or the other passenger.

A search of Oxendine’s person also allegedly uncovered $694 in cash and a list of police frequencies.  Two cellular phones were also listed as uncovered in the search.

When questioned, Oxendine allegedly denied any illegal activity but stated he did not know the person whose name appeared on the prescription bottle, nor could he explain the large sum of cash found in his possession.

He also allegedly stated that he purchased the gun for protection.

Oxendine was arrested on one felony count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.  He was arraigned in Magistrate Court and placed on $30,000.

He remains incarcerated at South Central Regional Jail pending further proceedings in the case.
