WesTest 2 scores are ‘mixed bag’ for county students

While Jackson County students generally did well on last spring’s WesTest 2 measure of achievement, the scores held some surprises for school officials.

Regarding Education Reforms and the Upcoming Special Session

“Today, I spoke with Del. Mary Poling and Sen. Robert Plymale, who are the chairs of the education working group, and they asked for more time to work through the education bills. I applaud this group because the members have acted diligently on the education measures, reaching agreement on more than 50 percent of the legislation. This is an important movement that we need in order to bring some necessary changes to our education system. They believe that by working during the June interims their work on all of the bills can be completed by June 11.

Ravenswood High is ‘School of Excellence’

The West Virginia Department of Education has announced that Ravenswood High School is one of 16 state schools named this year as West Virginia Schools of Excellence. It joins Hurricane High and Parkersburg High as one of the three high schools so named.
 

Ripley Auditorium re-seating project underway

Superintendent of Schools Blaine Hess has announced that the Ripley High Alumni Association’s plans to re-seat the Ripley auditorium have met with state approval. A question had arisen about a potential need to put an expensive sprinkler system in the facility if padded, cloth seats were installed.

Baccalaureate services tonight for Classes of 2010

Baccalaureate services are set tonight (Wednesday) for the graduating classes of 2010 at Ravenswood High School and Ripley High School.

SBA denies funding for Kenna Elementary

At a meeting on April 20, the State School Building Authority denied a Jackson County request for funding to build a new elementary school in Kenna. According the Superintendent Blaine Hess, the SBA wants the county to put a higher proportion of matching funds into the proposed project.

Local resident teaches children to have pride in mountain heritage

Tim Sayre believes that the history of the Appalachian people is one that those who live in the area should take pride in and pass down to younger generations. Donning a handmade shirt, suspendered breaches, a leather pouch and beaver hat, Sayre morphs into the “Mountain Man” to help the youth of the area get an idea of what life was like when trees were as big as redwoods and settlers lived by their skill with the axe, knife and firearm, as well as wits.  

Friends of Kenna Elementary plan enhancements to new facility

The group invites parents and interested Southern Jackson County residents to join in planning enhancements to the proposed new school that will help make it a centerpiece of the community.
