Freshman Libby Hall logged a game-high 22 points, including four from three-point territory, for the Devilettes Tuesday against Wirt County.

The Devilettes lost 56-59 in a game that came down to a fourth-quarter decision on Mick Price Court at The Pit.

Foul trouble late in the fourth period allowed Wirt County to tie the game 54-54.

The Lady Tigers then added a two-pointer and three points worth of additional free throws to make it 59-54 with seconds left on the clock.

A buzzer-beating two-pointer by freshman guard Lydia Alfred to make it 59-56 wasn’t enough to put one in the W column for the Devilettes, who are now 0-3. Alfred put up seven points and led the team in rebounds with 11.

“We didn’t put ourselves in the best position. We played hard and there were some positive things, but we definitely showed our youth. We had some game-management problems at the end of the game,” head coach Cara Williams said.

Hall, with her game-high scoring, shot very well in the matchup. She was 2-4 at the foul line.

“She struggled in the first couple of games, but found her stride tonight,” Williams said.

Hall said the loss was unfortunate, but the game offered valuable instructional time for the young Devilettes, whose roster is composed of mostly freshmen.

“I thought we did pretty well. We worked hard. We got up on them but we let them come back. Twice,” Hall said. “We need to learn to take it slower.”
