The Jackson County Grand Jury returned 34 indictments last week, including indictments against a man who caused severe head injuries to a 2-month-old baby and a man who allegedly attempted to murder a police officer before being shot when the officer returned fire.

• Dylan Joel Ray, Ripley, was indicted on one count of attempted murder, one count of malicious assault, one count of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, one count of domestic battery, and one count of presenting false information, according to information provided by the office of Jackson County Circuit Clerk Bruce Dewees.

Ray allegedly caused severe injuries to his 2-month-old daughter, requiring her to be taken by medical helicopter to CAMC General in Charleston for multiple skull fractures. The child was in the care of Ray, who is her father, the majority of the day, according to a criminal complaint filed against Ray in Jackson County Magistrate Court.

When Detective Ross Mellinger arrived at CAMC General, medical staff told him the child had sustained a series of “brutal” head injuries, “causing multiple prominent subdural hemorrhages and no less than nine different cranial skull fractures varying in size, shape, location, and point of impact,” Mellinger wrote in his complaint.

As a result of the injuries, the victim had substantially compromised neurological response and significant cerebral edema, Mellinger said in his complaint.

“The medical staff was able to conclude that the aforementioned injuries were sustained from numerous blows to the head of the victim or multiple vicious and graphic impacts of her body against a large foreign object,” Mellinger wrote in the complaint.

During questioning, Ray allegedly told Mellinger he became frustrated over the child crying and screaming, the complaint states. In an effort to quiet her, he grabbed the child by the torso with both hands and slammed her into her swing multiple times, and then threw her across the room into nearby furniture multiple times, according to the complaint.

• Billy Joe McFarland Jr, no address available, was indicted on one count of kidnapping, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of wanton endangerment and one count of domestic battery

McFarland allegedly went to Ravenswood to pick up a female acquaintance with whom he’d had a previous relationship, according to police. The suspect allegedly held the woman against her will by gunpoint, having purchased the firearm the same day.

Officers responded to a report that the vehicle was driving erratically. When officers tried pulling the vehicle over, the woman jumped out and McFarland began shooting at her while she was on the ground trying to take cover behind a police vehicle, police said.

McFarland allegedly spotted officers and began firing at them as well, police said.

Sgt. Seth Fisher returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times. Fisher was not harmed.
