Last year Ripley’s girls just missed winning it all in Class AAA at the West Virginia High School State Track and Field Meet.
The Lady Vikings were edged, 82-80, by Morgantown for the team title.
All 80 of Ripley’s points came by way of wins – eight in all. Three were turned in by Tori Starcher and two by Allison Fields. The duo was also a part of some winning relay teams.
The tandem will be back in Charleston for this year’s State Meet, which started today (Friday) and continues tomorrow (Saturday). Once again University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field is the venue.
Starcher, who also claimed the state cross country title this past fall, returns to defend her crowns in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meters. She also anchored the 4x400 meter relay team, which returns.
Fields is back to try and win the 100 and 200 again as a sophomore. She, too, is on the 4x400 team, which also features Cassidy Miller and Grace Bumpus.
Ripley also has Cassidy Miller (300 hurdles), Olivia Miller (high jump and pole vault), Tessa Ray (100), Maggie Criser (shot put), Parker Anderson (discus), Morgan Jarvis (pole vault) and the 4x800 team.
The Lady Vikings are under the direction of first year head coach Krystle Cunningham.
In the boys AAA division Ripley will be represented in five individual events and a relay. Sam Pierson (100 and 300 hurdles), Steven Carte (200), Corbin Campbell (shot put), Evan King (pole vault), Drew Swisher (pole vault) and the 4x200 team, consisting of Pierson, Carte, Brian Ash and Noah Carson, all qualified for Mike Bright’s Vikings.
The State Meet was to begin at 2 p.m. today. Saturday’s action gets going at 9 a.m. with field events. The running events will get started at 10.
