Coach Wes Swain’s red-hot No. 3-ranked Ravenswood Red Devils (22-8) open a best-of-three game Class A Region 4 championship baseball series Monday at home (6 p.m., Wright Field) versus Section 2 champion and No. 7-ranked Huntington St. Joseph Central Irish (13-7) of Coach Dave Jenkins.
The best-of-three regional championship series will shift to the Kennedy Center (George Smailes, Sr. Field) in Huntington on Tuesday (6 p.m.), weather permitting, with an if-necessary third game back at Wright Field on Wednesday (6 p.m.).
The Irish defeated Buffalo (Putnam), 4-2, May 12 on the Bison’s home diamond to claim the Region 4, Section 2 crown and won five straight games, before dropping a 9-8 decision at Ashland Blazer, KY on Monday.
Senior John Piaskoswski (CF, IF, P) leads the Irish with a .532 batting average, 25 hits and 25 runs scored. Sophomore Lenny Washington (3rd Base, P) hits at at .479 clip with 23 hits, 20RBIs and 16 runs scored. He has a 3.88 ERA with 35 strikeouts. Freshman Corey Sweeney hits at a .435 clip with 23 hits and 16 RBIs. Freshman Hunter Eplin hits .414 with 22 hits, 20 RBIs and 15 runs scored. Freshman Connor Joseph hits .370; sophomore Cameron Campbell, .284; junior shortstop Noah Beter, .266 with 21 runs scored; and sophomore Chris Harris (IF, OF, P), .225.
St. Joe’s top pitcher is senior southpaw Charlies White, who also plays left field. White is 5-1 on the mound this season with a 2.79 ERA and 35 strikeouts. White also handles the bat well with a .406 average, .455 on-base percentage and 25 runs scored.
Coach Wes Swain’s Red Devils has win five straight games through the LKC and sectional championships, including last Saturday’s dramatic 6-5 walk-off win for the sectional crown over Williamstown, and have won 16 of their last 17 games.
Senior Chase Swain led the Devils with a .556 batting average, .630 OBP (on-base percentage) and 1.078 SLG (slugging percentage). Swain has hit 10 home runs, 15 doubles and a triple, has 51 RBIs and has scored 44 runs. Senior Blake Bennettt hits at a .469 clip with a .552 OBP, .755 SLG, two homers, two triples and 18 doubles, 29 RBIs and 49 runs scored. Senior Lakin Tucker hits .380 with a .461 OBP, .520 SLG, two homers, one triple, six doubles, 30 RBIs and 35 runs scored. Senior Andrew Anglin hits .378 with a .510 OBP, .439 SLG, 14 RBIs and 35 runs scored. Junior Miciah Kennedy hits .343 with a .553 OBP, .471 SLG, nine doubles, 16 RBIs and 33 runs scored. Senior Luke Miller hits .338 with a .442 OBP, .463 SLG, two homers, seven doubles, 21 RBIs and 27 runs scored. Senior Ethan Mahan hits .254 with a .319 OBP, .317 SLG, four doubles, 11 RBIs and 18 runs scored.
On the mound, Swain is 6-2 with a 2.934 ERA, 1.235 WHIP, 59 strikeouts, 22 walks and 34 hiuts allowed. Tucker is also 6-2 with a 3.566 ERA, 1.493 WHIP, 43 strikeouts, 12 walks and 39 hits allowed. Mahan is 4-1 with a 4.460 ERA, 1.301 WHIP, 38 strikeouts, 14 walks and 35 hits allowed. Stephens Dawson is 3-3 with a 3.452 ERA, 1.685 WHIP, 22 strikeouts, 18 walks and 23 hits allowed.
The Red Devils and Irish have played just two common opponents in 2018—Buffalo and #2-ranked Charleston Catholic. Ravenswood beat Buffalo, 21-1, in their only meeting and dispatched Charleston Catholic, 9-3, on the road. St. Joseph beat Buffalo three times—12-2, 9-3 and 4-2 an lost to Charleston Catholic—8-5 and 6-3.
