State Police bomb squad called in

HOPEWELL — Hopewell Police and the Virginia State Police responded to reports of a suspicious package found in a Hopewell neighborhood on Wednesday morning.

According to Hopewell Fire Marshal Heather Marks, city police officers responded to reports of a possible explosive device at the corner of Cobblestone Drive and Stone Mill Drive in the Cobblestone community around 9:50 a.m. After officers examined the situation, they decided to call in the State Police.

The Virginia State Police Bomb Squad arrived on the scene with a special robot to examine the package. Crews remained on scene for several hours as the package was handled and disposed of.

All residents in the immediate area were evacuated. The Cobblestone neighborhood where the package was found is an age-restricted community limited to residents 50 years old or older.

Marks said the exact origin of the suspicious package is unknown.
