Kuryla to be honored at annual Boy Scouts dinner

The 22nd Annual Distinguished Community Service Award Dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, March 23, at 6:30 p.m. at Parchment Valley West Virginia Conference Center in Hill Hall. 

Parchment Valley is located just west of Ripley along WV Route 62 S.  Parchment Valley will cater a served dinner for this event.

This year is the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.  It is a special year for Scouts across the country and the Distinguished Community Service Award Dinner.

The proceeds from this dinner go to the Little Kanawha District of the Allohak Council BSA for activities in the District, which includes the Scouting units of Jackson, Roane, Calhoun, and Wirt Counties. 

West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin has been invited as the Keynote Speaker, along with Regional and Allohak Council BSA Representatives.  The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in Fayette County will be a major topic of this event.  This newly announced facility will serve as a High Adventure Base for Scouts across the country and around the world, as well as the permanent home of the National Boy Scout Jamboree.  It is an exciting time for Scouting in West Virginia.

The 22nd Distinguished Community Service Award recipient is William C. Kuryla, Ph.D.  Dr. Kuryla, or “Bill” as he is known around the community, is very active in our community and in the Boy Scout Movement. 

He is highly regarded in the Boy Scouts of America and holds several honors including the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope Awards, the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, and is a Wood Badge Course Director in both the Boy Scout and Club Scout Program areas.  He is a past President of the Allohak Council and remains a dedicated member of its Board of Directors.

Dr. Kuryla is the recipient of the Jaycees “Distinguished Service Award” (St. Albans Chapter) and the Outstanding Service Award” (West Virginia State Chapter).  The Kanawha Valley Section of the American Chemical Society honored him with their “Outstanding Service Award” and also the “Award for Scientific Achievement”. West Virginia Governor A.A. Moore Jr. conferred on him the “Honorary West Virginian” award for his meritorious service to the state.  The American Association for the Advancement of Science elected him a “Fellow” for his distinguished contributions to science.

With the Boy Scouts of America’s 100th Anniversary this year, The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in WV, and our Distinguished Community Service Award Recipient, Dr. Bill Kuryla, this dinner will be a celebration of Scouting.
