  • Devils whip Wahama in football season opener

  • The Ravenswood Red Devils christened the new home bleachers at Flinn Field in style Friday night with a 27-6 win over Class A No.9-ranked Wahama in both teams’ football season opener.
    Senior Rhys Jelich turned in a monster offensive game for Coach Mick Price, despite being limited in the second by a leg injury. Jelich carried 32 times for 193 yards and scored on 31-yard run. He completed nine of 10 passes for 142 yards including a seven-yard TD strike to senior Thomas Sturm.
    Isaac Crow hauled in four Jelich aerials for 78 yards and Ben Johnson, three for 59 stripes.
    Ravenswood spotted the White Falcons a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, after Whama recovered a Jelich fumble and marched 32 yards to score the game’s first points. Quarteerback Kaleib Sheets got the TD on a 15-yard run. Isaac Crow blocked the PAT to kept the score 6-0.
    The Red Devils answered with a 12-play, 65-yard drive, capped by Jelich’s seven-yard TD pass to Thomas Sturm. Jelich ran for the two-point conversion to give Ravenswood the lead fot good at 8-6 with 3:50 left in the opening quarter.
    The Devils scored again with 10:19 left in the half, marking 70 yards in six plays off a turnover. Sophomore linebacker Ike Akers caused a Wahama fumble recovered by Rhys Jelich. Jelich capped the ensuing drive with a 31-yard run. Ryan Cunningham booted the PAT and the Devils took a 15-6 lead to the locker room at the half.
    With momentum fluctuating in the third quarter, another big play energized the Devils. Senior Dylan Radabaugh blocked a Wahama punt with one hand, and sophomore safety Hayden Mandrake scooped up the bouncing ball and raced 43 yards for a touchdown with 6:42 left in the quarter. Cunningham’s PAT boot made it 21-6 in favor of Ravenswood.
    The Red Devils capped the game scoring with a 10-play, 97-yard scoring amrch following a spirited goal line stand. Senior Ben Johnson capped the drive with a one-yard run. The PAT kick failed to make the final score 27-6.
    Ravenswood rushed 49 times for 233 yards and added 153 yards passing on 10 of 11 passes for 386 offensive yards. Wahama totaled 196 offensive yards led by Phillip Serevicz’s 122 rushing yards on 13 carries.
    Senior Matt Peery led the Red Devil defense with six tackles. Matt Starcher added five (two sacks); Crow (sacks, two TFL, blocked PAT), Dylan Radabaugh (TFL, blocked punt), Rhys Jelich (fumble recovery) and Ike Akers (forced fumble), four tackles each.
    Ravenswood (1-0) makes a long trek to Webster Springs Friday for their first LKC game of the season to take on the Highlanders (1-0), who nipped Richwood, 33-32,in their season opener.
    POST-GAME NOTES: Ravenswood Principal Jo Hendricks, Mick Price and Dick Sturm presented a check for the school/community share of $117,500 of the bleacher project to the jackson County Board of Education in a pre-game ceremonies that also recognized “Teacher of the Year” honorees...The Ravenswood Band presented a rousing “Little Shop of Horrors” half-time show—arguably their best ever.
