Soccer! This upcoming sport of the times, has been around for years, but is just slowly showing it's face more and more. The first time I heard of it, I wondered what a crazy sport this must be. My daughter was 8 and decided she wanted to play, so I signed her up for the fall season. As I watched, I thought, this is just crazy. I was a basketball person; I knew those rules and how to play that game. Kicking a ball around on a field and trying to kick it into this net, that was just crazy. How do you control a ball with your foot? I could throw it into the net, but no hands are permitted. In fact, it is a foul to use your hands in this game, other than the occasional throw-in. I decided I would give this sport a chance and see what it was she liked about it. I was very thankful she had an awesome coach, or she would have been in trouble. And so it all began. The following spring, I was elected as Registrar for the league and I have been there ever since. Coaching, field work, concession, bathrooms, refereeing and whatever else may need done. Why? Because I love being involved with the kids and enjoying every minute with them.

Fall season is beginning, teams have been set and coaches are getting their kids together and practicing. The fields that have been quiet since May, are coming alive once again. My practice started tonight. 6 girls and 5 boys, all showing up for the first game apprehensive and not sure what to expect from this new coach and team. For an hour we went over things that needed to be known to kids moving up an age bracket. This age bracket that has different rules than the younger one they were used to. As the practice ended, they were smiling and happy. I thought, this is why I do what I do! We put our heads and hands together for the last evening cheer of TEAM! We are ALL a team, we can’t play alone. There is no I in team. We need each other to get the ball down the field and to that goal to score. This is something they must remember.

Ripley High Girls soccer team had a scrimmage 8/14 against Poca. Score was 2 - 1 with Presley Fisher and Holli Farkosh scoring our goals. Great job girls! The Lady Vikings are coached by new coach, Chris Stout and and assistant coach, Melanie Pierson. Good luck girls for a great season.
