MILLWOOD - Armstrong World Industries, Inc – Millwood Plant has committed generous support for Our Community’s Foundation’s Charity Challenge Matching Program. The company, which opened for operation in Jackson County in 2012, is serving as a gold sponsor of the Foundation’s annual Charity Challenge Program - providing $2,500 for matching funds for the September 20th run and fun walk and Community Benefit.       
Our Community’s Foundation – Jackson County annually produces the Charity Challenge 5K Run & Walk and Matching Program to support 20 local community projects and programs. Selected charities raise funds for a specific community program. The 20 participating charities will receive $1 for every $2 raised during the challenge. Grant checks will be presented at the Foundation’s Community Celebration event on October 16th with nationally acclaimed author and actor Henry Winkler as the guest of honor. The matching grants will benefit a wide variety of local programs and projects.

Armstrong World Industries celebrated 150 years in business in 2010 with 33 manufacturing locations in 8 countries and over 9,500 employees worldwide. The corporation markets the most extensive portfolio of residential and commercial ceiling and floor products available. Armstrong’s two main product categories are  Armstrong Building Products (ABP) which include: ceiling tiles, planks and panels; room dividers; backsplashes; Worthington Armstrong Venture (WAVE) Grid; and global acoustical ceilings & suspension systems and Armstrong Flooring Products (AFP) including hardwood; laminate; vinyl sheet; vinyl tile; luxury vinyl tile; and linoleum. These products are marketed under the brand names: Armstrong, Bruce, and Robbins. Armstrong’s sales are 90% commercial and 10% residential.
Like all Armstrong plants, the Millwood plant’s management team places an emphasis on high efficiency and environmental sustainability.  The Millwood Plant is an example of “new” manufacturing/production within Armstrong.  Not only does the local facility feature an extremely small footprint, it also boasts a virtually 100% closed loop production process, which reuses waste materials created in an upstream manufacturing process to reduce overall waste and produce a high grade quality fiber.  This fiber is used in Armstrong’s ceiling tiles for improved acoustics and as a sound barrier.

The Millwood plant was constructed in 2011to early 2012 with base capital spending on an initial investment of $54 million. The local plant employees 50-55 employees and operates 24 hours a day seven days a week with 12 hour rotating shifts. The Jackson County plant produces mineral wool.  It is packaged in multiple ways and supplied to Armstrong plants and Fibrox (an outside customer) for use in ceiling tiles. The local Armstrong plant arced in the furnace on March 22, 2012 and produced its first mineral wool on April 13, 2012.

The 20 participating non-profit organizations and sponsors will be honored at the Foundation’s Community Celebration which will be held on October 16th at the Armory in Millwood. Qualifying sponsors are also invited to a private pre-reception with Henry Winkler.  Winkler will be spending time earlier in the day with local 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students in a special “Hooked on Hank” Reading Program and will serve as the community event guest speaker later that night at the Foundation’s Community Benefit. Winkler’s appearance builds on the landmark celebrations hosted by Our Community’s Foundation.
