  • RIPLEY - The Jackson County Board of Education took a variety of actions at their regular meeting on the evening of June 26.
    Judge Thomas C. Evans III, chief judge of the Fifth Judicial Circuit, administered the oath of office to recently-reelected board members, Steve Wedge, Jack Wiseman and Carroll Staats.
    Cinda Francis of the Sandyville Community Pride Committee provided the board with an update on the Gilmore Elementary School walking trail.
    The board approved BrickStreet Insurance as a provider of workers’ compensation benefits are 2014-2015 school term; approved a resolution regarding compliance with provisions of the Affordable Care Act; and approved designated project funds in the amount of $660,075.
    In personnel action, the board acknowledged:
    • Retirements of Wilma Bennett, teacher, Fairplain Elementary School, effective July 1, 2014; and Luanne McCown, school psychologist, effective July 1, 2014.
    • Resignations of Justin Frazier, teacher, Ripley Elementary School, effective July 20, 2014; Susan S. Chambers, teacher, Henry J. Kaiser Elementary School, effective June 26, 2014; Sheila Gibbs, yearbook sponsor, Ravenswood High School, effective June 30, 2014; and Bethany Bolan, teacher, Ravenswood Middle School, effective July 9, 2014.
    • Transfers including Alyssa Hall, from teacher, Autism, Henry J. Kaiser Elementary School to teacher, Universal 4-Year Old Program, Ripley Elementary School, effective for the 2014-2015 school term; Tanya Asleson, teacher, Ravenswood Middle School for Math Grade 6 to Reading Grade 7, effective for the 2014-2015 school term; Meredith Stover, teacher, Special Education, Ripley Middle School, to teacher, Special Education, Ripley High School, effective 2014-2015 school term; Ronald Conger, bus operator, Transportation, from Route #62 to Route #17, effective 2014-2015 school term; Virginia Wolford, bus operator, Transportation, from Route #53 to Route #20, effective for the 2014-2015 school term.
    Employments included Bob DeFrank, assistant football coach, Ripley Middle School (maximum 525 hours), effective for the 2014-2015 school term; Kevin Board, teacher, Science, Ripley High School, effective for the 2014-2015 school term; John Kessell, teacher, Vocational Agriculture, half-time, Ripley High School, effective for the 2014-2015 school term; Karen DeVault, Cook III, half-time, Ripley High School, effective for the 2014-2015 school term; Stanley Lewis, bus operator/custodian, summer programs/PATCH bus route, on an as needed basis, beginning July 1, 2014 through July 18, 2014; Kevin Board, assistant freshman football coach, Ripley High School (maximum 525 hours), beginning with the 2014-2015 term; and substitute service personnel, effective for the 2014-2015 school term.
    The board rescinded action taken on March 20, 2014 placing A. Ellen Krimmel on transfer and reassignment into a special position, from teacher Kindergarten to teacher Grade 1, Ripley Elementary School.
    The board approved up to 32 hours as coordinated with the principal at $15 per hour for Elizabeth Cecil from Kenna Elementary School to pack supplies/materials for transfer to the new school and the set up classroom/work areas.
    Teachers to attend required AP training summer 2014 at the daily rate of pay included Ravenswood High School: Jackie Gacek, Nathan Corathers, Jon Wheeler and Ben Nesselroad; and Ripley High School: Joanna McKown, Annie Hancock, Barbara Heckert, Steve Sayre and Jo Boggess Phillips.
    Page 2 of 2 - Tabitha Craddick was hired as the authorized certified coach, volleyball, Ripley High School, effective 2014-2015 school term.
    Approved Community Eligibility Provisions to provide free meals to all elementary school students for the 2014-2015 school term; all middle school students for the 2014-2015 school term; approved the continuing practice of allowing students eligible to receive a reduced price breakfast at Ravenswood High School and Ripley High School two receive breakfast at no charge for the 2014-2015 school term. Approved a contract with R&J Mobile Home Movers in the amount of $12,000 for the of the Jackson County Wellness Center.
    Approved a contract with West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources to provide a Community Work Experience Program (CWEP) for the 2014-2015 school term.
     Approved a contract with West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services to provide the Joint Opportunities for Independence Program (JOIN) for the 2014-2015 school term.
    Approved funds in the amount of $500 to assist a Ripley High School student in the World Archery Competition in Wisconsin in July.
    Approved a request from Judy Canterbury for her son, Matthew Canterbury, to attend Jackson County Schools rather than Wirt County Schools, effective for the 2014-2015 school term.
    Approved a request from Benjamin and Belinda Carpenter for their daughter, Amelia Grace Carpenter, to attend Jackson County Schools rather than Roane County Schools, effective for the 2014-2015 school term.
    Approved a request from Nichole Miller for her son, Bodin Miller, to attend Jackson County Schools other than Roane County Schools, effective for the 2014-2015 school term.
    Approved a request from Kristy Smith for her daughter, Mattalynn Smith, to attend Jackson County Schools rather than Kanawha County Schools, effective for the 2014-2015 school term.
