  • Nell Jean (Wilson) Smith went home to be with her Lord and eternal family on June 13, 2014 surrounded by her family. Nell courageously battled breast and ovarian cancer.
Nell is survived by her loving husband Richard J. Smith of 65 years. They were married Oct. 1948 at Maynor Freewill Baptist Church in Raleigh County.
She is also survived by her three children Dianna (Bill) Wood of Charleston, WV, Darlene (Mike) Mitchell of VA and Tim (Barbara) Smith of Ripley, WV. She has three grandchildren she loved equally Jennifer Wood of Charleston, WV, Ashley Nichols of VA and Kyle Smith of Ripley, WV.  She is also survived by the extended family of Danielle, John, Kendal and Deryn Given of Charleston, WV.
Nell was the youngest of 12 children born in 1931 to Lorenza (Rans) and Lillie (Atha) Wilson of Harper, WV. Nell is preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and seven sisters.
Nell loved her thirty-seven nieces and nephews scattered across the USA. She faithfully tried to remember them on birthdays, graduation and weddings.
Nell and Richard provided a loving Christian home for their children, grandchildren and their spouses. The provision of educational opportunities and travel adventures were equally important in raising their children.
Nell is a member of the Parchment Valley Baptist Church in Ripley and a former member of West Ripley Baptist Church. She loved her church families. The outreach ministries “Shoebox,” the schools’ “Snak Pak” and “Free Yard Sale” were among her favorite church activities.
The TOPS group was an important part of her life. She cherished the members as friends and enjoyed the activities the group conducted.
Nell loved hand embroidering baby blankets which swaddled babies across America. She made dolls, clothes and costumes for her grandchildren and those she loved. Cooking and sewing brought her joy.  Nell was a quiet and gentle woman who placed the needs of others before her own.
Nell, along with her family, wishes to thank Steven Jubelirer, MD. She highly valued his guidance during her two year battle.  He was her “rock” in the medical field. He made her smile with the motto “peace, love and happiness.” Thank you to Donna Tittle, RN and all the staff at the David Lee Cancer Center for their support. Special thanks to the dedicated staff on 5 South oncology at CAMC Memorial.
