  • Ravenswood PD promotes Cogar

  • RAVENSWOOD - With a stamp of approval from Ravenswood City Council, Patrolman Joseph E. Cogar was promoted to Police Sergeant by Chief Lance Morrison on Tuesday night at 7:25 p.m.
    “Joe has the trust and respect of the entire department and I expect
    him to continue to mentor the men, act as an example for the young
    officers and show them how to be an effective leader,” said Morrison.
    Cogar had the attention of the room after accepting the promotion, “I
    love the city of Ravenswood and I love the people who live here. I
    couldn’t ask for better men to work with in this department.”
    Cogar followed in his father’s footsteps and entered the Army Reserves
    at the age of 17. He served in the U.S. Navy for over 20 years and
    earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer and attended the U.S. Navy
    Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport Rhode Island.
    During his career he performed as a Senior Enlisted Advisor and was
    forward deployed during Desert Storm.
    In addition, Cogar was in the Naval Special Warfare Seal Team in
    Little Creek Virginia, Naval Expeditionary Guard Battalion at Camp
    Delta in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and deployed during Operation Iraqi
    Freedom to Bahrain. He later attended the North Carolina Basic Law
    Enforcement Academy and joined the Elizabeth City Police Department
    where he served from 2009 to 2013, when he relocated to Ravenswood
    where most of his family resides.
    “I was impressed from the moment I met him,” said Ravenswood Mayor
    Michael Ihle. “His demeanor and professionalism left a positive mark
    on our community and will certainly continue to do so.”
    Ravenswood Patrolman R.J. Knox summed up a passionate moment for the
    new Sergeant when he finished his thoughts with the words, “I would go
    to the ends of the earth with him.”
    In unrelated news, Council voted to begin the hiring process for Ravenswood City Pool employees and eased into an executive session to discuss an internal personnel investigation.
