Charles Martin “Coach” Shaver, 89, of Ravenswood, WV died March 25, 2014, in Cabell Huntington Hospital.

  He was a coach, teacher and school administrator as well as a standout athlete who was a proud decorated United States Army veteran of World War II. He graduated from West Virginia University where is also played collegiate baseball and remained a devoted Mountaineer fan. He attended the Calvary Baptist Church, Ravenswood.

  He was survived by his children, Charles “Butch” and Loretta Shaver, Stanley and Babbe Shaver, Dee and Kim Scritchfield, Elaine and Pat Varney; stepchildren, Melissa and Steve Hatcher and Jeff and Terri Fox; a sister, Oma Rake, 14 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and cherished caretakers Sharon Miller and Susan Pease.

 His former wives, Claudette Shaver, and Johnnie Mae Shaver, son, Johnny Ray Shaver and stepson, Wesley Fox, preceded him in death. 

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Calvary Baptist Church, Ravenswood WV, with Pastor Fred Basnett, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Independence Cemetery, Sandyville.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in his memory to the Charles Shaver Athletic Scholarship Fund, 1 Wall Street, Ravenswood, WV 26164. Casto Funeral Home, Evans, WV, is assisting the family.
