  • Lady Viking sluggers off to 3-1 start

  • PARKERSBURG – It wasn’t the perfect weekend but Ripley High’s softball team remained virtually unharmed after splitting a double header with Parkersburg South on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Vikings survived a late surge by Parkersburg on Friday night and edged the Lady Reds in the twin bill, 3-2 and 10-1 in front of an enthusiastic Ripley home crowd.
    Chelsey Hager took the ball in game one on Friday and pitched a gem in leading the squad to a 3-2 extra inning victory. Hager fanned 10 while giving up no earned runs in the contest. Fielding errors nearly cost Ripley the game in the seventh, when the Lady Reds knotted the score.
    RIPLEY HITTING - Kelsey Moore 3-for-5,RBI and a run, Meghan Brannon 1-for-3 and an RBI, Ashley Mellinger 2-for-4 and one RBI, Dusti Fisher went 1-for-3, Darby Petersen was 1-for-3 with a double, Sierra Norris and Hannah Ford scored a run.
    In game two, Ripley rode a 10-run third inning and a good pitching performance from Darby Petersen to victory in a mercy rule shortened contest. Petersen struck out three and walked one while giving up one earned run.
    RIPLEY HITTING - Kelsey Moore 2-for-3,two RBIs, two runs, Meghan Brannon 1-for-3, one RBI and one run, Chelsey Hager 1-for-2 with two RBIs, one run, Ashley Mellinger 1-for-3, Hannah Ford 2 runs, Dusti Fisher 1-for-1 an RBI and two runs , Darby Petersen 1-for-2 and two RBIs, Sapphire Parsons and Sierra Norris scored one run each.
        The team traveled to Parkersburg’s Don Godbey Memorial Park on Saturday to take on a good Parkersburg South squad. South’s Anna Richards drove in the tying runs in the seventh and then scored the winning run in the eleventh frame as the Lady Patriots squeaked out a 6-5 win over the Lady Vikings.
    Darby Petersen hurled the first eight innings before giving the mound to Chelsey Hager, who suffered the loss in relief. Richards delivered a two run single off the first base bag to knot the score in the seventh and force extra innings.
    While Ripley notched 12 hits, they committed five errors.
    RIPLEY HITTING - Kelsey Moore 1-for- 6 with a run, Meghan Brannon 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI, two runs, Ashley Mellinger 2-for-6 and an RBI, Darby Petersen 1-for-5 with an RBI, Chelsey Hager 1-for-5 and an RBI, Tori Anderson 1-for-5, Myranda Murphy 1-for-3, Hannah Ford was 2-for-5 with a run and Sierra Norris scored a run.
    Ripley won the second game of the twin bill, 5-1 on strong pitching from Hager and RBI hits from Meghan Brannon, Dusti Fisher (2) and Ashley Mellinger. Hager went the distance while giving up five hits and striking out 11 batters. Ripley plays at Capital tonight.
