  • As of  today (Tuesday, January 7) all counties in West Virginia are under a Chill Watch.  The state-wide watch warns WV residents of dangerously cold air and wind chills. As of now the watch  will be lifted  today at 3 p.m. EST.
The warning states that the Wind Chill readings will be around 15 to 30 degrees below zero. The lowest WCF (wind chill factor) was the lowest earlier this morning. However, low WCF will remain for the rest of the day.
Cold temperatures combined with gusting winds causes dangerously frigid weather that can lead to frost bite, hypothermia or even death if  precautionary measures are not taken. If you must be outdoors wear loose layers of clothing and limit time spent outdoors.
Take caution when using alternative sources of heat. Make sure to have proper ventilation for kerosene heaters as it may lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Do not use generators or grills indoors. These item are strictly for outside usage.
In addition, do not leave alternative heating sources unattended. It only takes a short amount of time for a fire to break out.
If there is a need to drive your gas tank should be full. Road conditions are unpredictable so keep a blanket(s) in your car in case of an accident or if your car’s heater quits working.
