RAVENSWOOD - Ravenswood’s Red Devilettes jumped out to an early lead, but unbeaten (7-0) St. Marys’ 6-4 Kendra Walker and generous opportunities for the Blue Devils at the free-throw line proved to be the difference in a 71-58 win at The Pit Saturday night.
St. Marys rallied for a 13-11 first-quarter scoring advantage and outscored Ravenswood 16 – 13 in the second quarter for a five-point, 29 – 24, lead at the half. But it was the third quarter that proved to be the difference in the game as the Blue Devils took a 21-14 scoring margin to pull way to a 50-38 lead heading into the final eight minutes. In the final quarter with both Taylor Treadway and Hailey Miller fouling out, St. Mary’s eked out a 21-20 scoring advantage to lock up the 13-point victory.
The Blue Devils made good on 22 of 34 chances from the charity stripe to Ravenswood’s 17 of 22 chances.
Miller tied Walker for game scoring honors with 21 points. Miller scored five two-point goals and added 11 of 13 free throws for her total. Walker had eight fielders and converted five of seven free throws for her 21 points.
For the Devilettes, Taylor Treadway added nine points including a three-point goal; Kayla Scritchfield (trey) seven; Mariah Jackson six; Taylor Love (trey) five; Chesney Hudson and Haylie Reynolds four each; and Kindsey Torris two.
For the Blue Devils, Jordan Fox added 14 points; Ashley Hall 12; Tori Ashworth 10; Mikaela Britton five; Jenna Nichols four; Haley Everett three; and Alyssa Fetty and Lydia Watson one each.
Ravenswood shot an icy 25% from the floor, canning just 16 of 63 shots. Miller grabbed nine rebounds and Treadway eight. Miller and Hudson dished off three assists each. Miller and Treadway notched two steals each.
“We thought we could hold Walker and Hall under 20 each, we had a chance,” said Coach Cara Williams. “I thought we did a pretty good job of running our offense in the first half, but we got down in the third quarter and we panicked a little bit. We’re eight games into the season, but we’re still a young team.”
Ravenswood (5-3) hosts Williamstown (now 5-4, winners of five in a row) in a key LKC North game tomorrow (Wednesday) night at the RvHS Physical Education Building. The Devilettes will play their second girls-boys double dribbler at The Pit on Saturday night in a 5:45 p.m. game versus visiting Braxton County.
