CANNONSBURG, PA - Ripley High’s Lucas Simpkins saw the podium over the weekend with a No. 7 finish (120) to lead the Vikings at the prestigious Powerade Christmas Wrestling tournament.

The annual event boasts nationally ranked competitors and is known as one of the premier prep wrestling tournaments on the east coast.

Simpkins, a state runner-up last spring, finished (4-2) in the tournament and continues to get better with each match.
Two-time state champ Jake Martin wrestled well but dropped two hard fought matches in the tournament.
In the 46-team field, Ripley finished No. 42 with 37.5 points. Defending West Virginia Class AAA State Champion Huntington High took No. 12 with 88.5 total points.

Heavily favored Franklin Regional took top honors notching 236.5 team points.

“Simpkins really wrestled well and got good results,” said Ripley coach Matt Smith.

“Andrejs (Daniluks 113) and Jake (Martin 152) wrestled well too. Jake lost a couple of really close matches that could have easily went his way.”
