RAVENSWOOD – For the second time this season, the Ravenswood Red Devils let a game against a top-ranked Class A opponent they could have won slip through their fingers. The first was at Williamstown, when a 14-0 half-time lead evaporated into a 21-14 loss.  Friday night was even worse.

The Red Devil defense played well--well enough to win against unbeaten No. 2-ranked St. Marys, but the offense laid an inexplicable egg—poor blocking resulted in little to no ground game by a team that big-played Clay County off the field last week. No Red Devil ball carrier cracked 55 rushing yards and the passing game except for a couple of plays was equally inept. Ravenswood played without the services of starter Kyle Hickman (injury).
The result of the lack of offense was that two first-half David Gray touchdown runs and 12 point were plenty in a 12-0 loss.

In fact, Ravenswood’s lone scoring chance of the game came on its first possession off the opening kickoff when the Red Devils drove to the St. Marys 17. Facing fourth and short, Ravenswood opted for a 31-yard field goal try, which sailed wide left.

The Blue Devils responded with a seven-play, 80-yard drive to take the lead on a 29-yard David Gray touchdown run with 3:57 left in the opening quarter. The PAT kick attempt hit the right upright and fell back into the end zone to leave the score at 6-0.

St. Marys scored again to double their lead to 12-0 with 4:34 left in the half as Gray broke loose on a 22-yard TD gallop to cap a 10-play, 43-yard drive. The pass for two points by broken up by Heath Burgess.
The second half saw the Red Devils put up two goal line stands to deny St. Marys scoring opportunities, but the game-long offensive ineptitude continued to the frustrating conclusion.

Rhys Jelich led the enemic Ravenswood rushing attack with 11 carries for 53 yards. 900-plus yard rusher Devin Crews added 10 carries for 35 yards; Ben Johnson, three carries for nine yards; Heath Burgess, three carries for a net minus four yards; and Thomas Sturm, one carry on a double reverse called inside the Red Devil 10 for minus six yards. As a team, Ravenswood rushed just 28 times for a mere 87 rushing yards.

Heath Burgess completed six of 17 passes for 89 yards with one interception. Ben Johnson had three catches for 48 yards; Thomas Sturm, one catch for 29 yards; Devon Crews, one catch for 18 yards; and Rhys Jelich one catch for minus six yards. Team leading receiver Isaac Crow had no catches in the game.

Ravenswood totaled just 176 yards of offense with nin first downs (five via rush, three via pass and one via penalty) and drew four flags for 22 yards.

David Gray led the Blue Devils with 21 carries for 115 yards and two TDs. Noah Spitzer added eight carries for 48 yards; Jeremy Pratt, 12 carries for 33 yards; Michael Stout, three carries for 21 yards; and Corey Stewart, five carries for 20 yards. St. Marys totaled 49 carries for 237 rushing yards.

Stout completed seven of 12 passes for 112 yards with Gray catching five for 63 of those yards.
The Blue Devils totaled 349 yards of offense with 15 first downs (10 via rush and five via pass) and drew four flags for 30 yards.

Isaac Crow punted thee times with a 46-yard average. Heasth Burgess had one punt return for six yards and Devon Crews, one for one yard.

Nathan Cunningham kicked off once for 55 yards. Rhys Jelich had two kickoff returns for 18 yards and Matt Peery, one for three yards.

Defensively, Connor Jelich led the Ravenswood prevent unit with 12 tackles. Rhys Jelich (TFL, PBU) added eight tackles, Matt Peery seven, Thomas Sturm six, Heath Burgess (two PBUs) and Matt Starcher five each, Isaac Crow (TFL), Roy Bush and Devon Crews four each, Jordan Saunders and Willy Parsons two each and Nathan Cunningham and Dylan Radabaugh (sack) one each.

Ravenswood (5-4) plays at Ripley Friday in the Battle of the Hatchet. Any chance of a playoff berth for the Red Devils will require a win over the Vikings (2-7) on their home carpet at Death Valley Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
