PT. PLEASANT – If something good can come from a 31-21 loss, Coach Mick Price’s Ravenswood Red Devils (4-3) can bank the fact that they played well against the Class AAA No. 3 Pt. Pleasant Big Blacks (7-0)—better than any team thus far in 2013, in fact outplaying their hosts in the second half of the game. That fact should bolster the Devils’ confidence going forward.
A couple of early Ravenswood snafus (passing on a field goal try and then missing fourth-and-one from the Point 25 on their first drive of the game and a roughing the punter penalty that kept a Point drive alive that ended in a touchdown), the Big Blacks’ short passing game and some creative clock operation at OVB Field in Mason County were the difference in the hard-fought game.
After stopping Ravenswood’s opening long drive on fourth and one at their 25, Point marched 75 yards in 10 plays to score. Cody Mitchell finished the drive with an 11-yard touchdown run. Colin peal booted the PAT and the Big Blacks led 7-0 witjh 3:33 left in the opening quarter.
A roughing the punter penalty helped the Big Blacks move 80 yards in 15 plays to score again early int he second quarter. Mitchell again capped the scoring drive with a five-yard run. Peal’s AT boot made it 14-0 with 9:22 left in the half.
The Red Devils got on the scoreboard in dramatic fashion less than three minutes later. Senior Devon Crews burst up the middle and raced 46 yards for a touchdown to cap a quick five-play, 76-yard scoring march. Nathan Cunningham booted the PAT and Ravenswood that sliced the deficit in half at 14-7 with 6:52 left in the half.
Just over three minutes later, the Big Blacks scored again—this time via the pass as Chase Walton hauled in a 35-yard scoring strike from Aden Yates. The scoring pass capped an eight-play, 56-yard march. Peal booted the PAT and the Big Blacks led 21-7 with 3:27 left.
Some creative clock operation helped the home team move into position for a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the half, set up by Austin Toler’s interception of a Heath Burgess pass. A scramble and pass by Yates took very little time off the clock and then a snap and spike to stop the clock for the field goal try took just .4 second. Ravenswood protests fell on deaf ears, and Peal booted the field goal to give Pt. Pleasant a 24-7 lead at the break.
Pt. Pleasant scored the first points of the second half (and their last of the game) on an eight-yard run by Cody McDaniel with 6:06 left in the third quarter. McDaniel’s TD capped an 11-play, 66-yard drive. Peal’s PAT kick made it 31-7.
Page 2 of 3 - Ravenswood answered quickly with a two-play, 74-yard scoring bolt. Senior quarterback Heath Burgess got the score on an option keeper that covered 68 yards to the end zone. Cunningham’s PAT kick made it 31-14 with 5:12 left in the third quarter.
Ravenswood scored again with 8:15 left in the fourth quarter as Rhys Jelich plunged into the end zone from one yard out to cap a 12-play, 70-yard drive. Cunningham’s PAT boot made the final score 31-21.
