  • Devils’ second quarter explosion buries Braxton

  • FLATWOODS – Senior running back Devon Crews led a second-quarter Red Devils 33-point explosion as Ravenswood buried the host Braxton County Eagles, 53-16, at Flatwoods Friday night.
    Crews scored three touchdowns in the second quarter as part of a 193-yard rushing night as the Devils moved to 4-2 on the season and avenged two straight losses to the Eagles.
    Matt Peery put the Devils on the scoreboard first with 3:45 left in the opening quarter on a one-yard plunge. The PAT kick was wide and Ravenswood led 6-0. The score stayed that way as the second quarter began, and then Ravenswood exploded scoring points on offense, special teams and defense. As the half ended, Coach Mick Price’s charges has scored 33 second quarter points to take total command of the game and put out of reach with a 39-0 half-time advantage.
    Crews got the second-quarter scoring parade started with a 13-yard TD run just 1:08 (10:52) into the second quarter. A run for two was stopped short and the Devils led 12-0.
    Crews scored again on a four-yard run with 5:34 left in the half. Nathan Cunningham booted the PAT and Ravenswood led 19-0.
    Junior defensive end Dylan Radabaugh scored his first touchdown of the season on a special teams’ play for Ravenswood’s next six-pointer. Radabaugh fought through blocker and blocked a Braxton County punt attempt with his left hand. He then scooped up the bounding football and rumbled 26 yards for a touchdown with 2:01 left in the half. Cunningham’s PAT kick made it 26-0.
    Ravenswood scored again just 29 seconds later after a fumble recovery on the ensuing kickoff. This time, senior quarterback Heath Burgess lofted a seven-yard pass to Crews in the back left corner of the end zone for the TD. The PAT kick was blocked and the Red Devils led 32-0 with 1:32 left in the half.
    The Devils’s weren’t done yet, as junior cornerback Ben Johnson scored the final TD of the half on a 41-yard interception return with just 28.5 second left in the first half. Cunningham’s PAT boot was true and the Devils led 39-0 at the break.
    Ravenswood picked up where they left off in the third quarter as junior Isaac Crow hauled in a 24-yard TD strike from Burgess with 7:29 left in the third quarter. Cunningham’s PAT kick made it 46-0.
    Chase Oney finally put the host Eagles on the scoreboard with 5:46 left in the third quarter, as Ravenswood began substituting freely. Cody Hilton hauled in the two-point conversion pass from Thomas Pritt, and Ravenswood led 46-8.
    Junior Rhys Jelich scored Ravenswood’s final points of the game on a three-yard TD burst with 2:51 left in the third quarter. Preston Humphreys booted the PAT and Ravenswood led 53-8.
    Page 2 of 2 - Oney scored the final points of the game for the Eagles with 9:41 left in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run. Andrew Jordan pulled in the two-point conversion pass from Pritt to make the final score 53-16.
    Devon Crews led the Ravenswood rushing attack with 12 carries for 193 yards and two TDs. Rhys Jelich added seven carries for 49 yards and a TD. Ravenswood rushed 36 times for 269 yards and four TDs.
    Heath Burgess completed nine of 10 passes for 98 yards and two TDs. Isaac Crow had three catches for 40 yards and a TD.
    Ravenswood totaled 367 yards of offense with 16 first downs and drew eight flags for 61 yards.
    Jared Pitchford led the Eagles’ ground game with 13 carries for 69 yards. Chase Oney added 14 carries for 57 yards. Braxton County rushed 39 times for 151 yards and added 82 yards passing for a total 233 offensive yards. The Eagles totaled 13 first downs and drew six flags for 50 yards.
