  • A tale of two halves: Jackets rally over Devils

  • WILLIAMSTOWN – It was a tale of two halves at Williamstown Friday night. Visiting Ravensowod totally dominated the first half and led 14-0. The Class A No. 1-ranked Yellow Jackets owned the second half with help from Red Devils miscues to rally for a 21-14 Homecoming victory.
    It was all Red Devils through the first quarters as Coach Mick Price’s charges stuffed the Yellow jackets are every opportunity, limiting them to just three first downs and scoring 14 unanswered points.
    Junior Rhys Jelich scored both Red Devils touchdowns. Jelich rambled 11 yards for the first score of the game with 6:32 left in the opening quarter to cap a 10-play, 65-yard march to the end zone. Senior Nathan Cunningham booted the PAT and Ravenswood led 7-0.
    Jelich scored again with 8:05 left in the second quarter on a one-yard plunge to cap a, eight-play, 61-yard drive. Cunningham’s PAT kick made it 14-0 before a stunned Williamstown Homecoming crowd. That score held at the half, although it could have been and probably should have been even more of a Ravenswood lead.
    As dominating as the first half was for the Red Devils, the second half unraveled into a cluster of missed tackles and costly turnovers by Ravenswood. The opportunistic Yellow Jackets clawed their way back into the game, converting two fumbles into touchdowns—the final one for the winning touchdown with 2:40 left in the game.
    Williamstown sliced the Devil advantage in half with 7:11 left in the third quarter off a Ravenswood fumble. Tracy Hart raced 34 yards through several missed tackles to the end zone to cap a quick, two-play, 53-yard scoring march. Trace Elder booted the PAT.
    The Jackets knotted the game at 14-14 with 46.7 seconds left in the third quarter, capitalizing on another Devil miscue to put together a five-play, 37-yard scoring drive. Quarterback Jake Tracewell waggled his way for 10 yards into the end zone to cap the march. Elder’s PAT kick knotted the game at 14-14.
    The final quarter saw a number of momentum swings, before the Red Devils committed the final turnover on a lost fumble just after stopping the Yellow Jackets on downs. Fullback David Hastings scored the winning touchdown with 2:40 left in the game on a 17-yards run leaving three Devils who missed tackles in his wake. Elder booted the PAT for Williamstown’s first lead of the game.
    Ravenswood went to the air in desperation tossing an overthrow interception on the ensuing series. The Devils got the ball back once more but were anable to convert on a fourth down play.
    It was truly a game and a win that got away from the Red Devils.
    Rhys Jelich led the Ravenswood rushing attack with 20 carries for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Devon Crews added 10 carries for 59 yards; Ben Johnson, seven carries for 54 yards; and Heath Burgess netted minus three yards on eight carries. The Red Devils totaled 45 rushed for 195 yards.
    Page 2 of 2 - Burgess completed just three of 11 passes for 16 yards with two interceptions. Devon Crews tried a pass that was intercepted.
    Jelich had two catches for 12 yards and Isaac Crow, one for four yards.
    Ravenswood totaled 211 offensive yards with 11 first downs (10 via rush and one via pass) and drew five flags for 45 yards.
    David Hastings led the Yellow Jackets with 10 carries for 130 yards and a TD. Trace Hart added 14 carries for 86 yards and a TD. Williamstown totaled 38 rushes for 245 yards. Tracewell completed six of 23 passes for 47 yards with one interception.
    Williamstown totaled 292 offensive yards with nine first downs (seven via rush and two via pass) and drew nine flags for 85 yards.
    Isaac Crow punted six times with a 35.67 yard per punt average. Devon Crews returned two punts for 30 yards and Heath Burgess four for no gain.
    Nathan Cunningham kicked off three times with a 54.67 yards average per kickoff. Matt Peery returned two kickoffs for 12 yards and Jordan Saunders one for no gain.
    Defensively, Matt Peery led the Devils with nine tackles. Connor Jelich (TFL) added eight tackles, Isaac Crow five, Heath Burgess (interception, PBU), Ben Johnson, Matt Starcher (TFL), and Rhys Jelich four each, Devon Crews and Thomas Sturm three each, Jordan Saunders and Willy Parsons two each and Nathan Cunningham, Dylan Radabaugh and Kyle Hickman one each.
    Now 2-2 on the season, Ravenswood hosts the Ritchie County Rebels (4-1) Friday night for Homecoming in a game that is now pivotal in terms of the remaining season for the Red Devils. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
