  • JACKSON COUNTY - It was a night for a nail-biter in Williamstown and a rout in Ripley as both Ravenswood and Ripley varsity football teams suffered setbacks on the gridiron.
For the Red Devils (2-2), it was a tale of two halves. Junior Rhys Jelich scored two first half touchdowns on runs of 11 and one yard to put the Devils up, 14-0 at halftime. Ravenswood held the Class A No. 1 team to three first half first downs.
In the second half, Williamstown scored after two Red Devil fumbles and stole a victory from the arms of the Red Devils, 21-14.
Williamstown fullback David Hastings scored the game winner and rushed for 136 yards on just 10 touches. Ravenswood was led by Jelich’s 20 carries for 85 yards and two scores.
For the Vikings (0-5), they played host to the top ranked Class AAA Huntington Highlanders for the blue and white’s 2013 homecoming.
Ripley kicked off the game with a bang as Kade Harrison returned the kickoff 42 yards to put the Vikings in Highlander territory. After a three and out, Ripley scored on their next possession when Trevor Tucker connected with wideout Kade Harrison for a 55-yard strike that put Ripley up, for a fleeting moment, 7-0 after a successful Easton Berry point after.
The Highlanders turned on the jets soon after and scored 14 in the first quarter and 28 in the second to post a 42-7 halftime advantage and never looked back as they cruised to a 77-7 thrashing.
Huntington boasted three 100-yard rushers on the night in Charles Crawford (134), Nick Tubbs (146) and Daniel Clark (118). They were 11 yards from having four ball-carriers hit the century mark with Paden Christian’s 89-yard effort. The men in green racked up 693 total yards to Ripley’s 150.
Ravenswood celebrates homecoming next Friday as they host Ritchie County and Ripley travels to Nitro.
