KEYSER - The machinist equipment donated to Mineral County by the Robert C. Byrd Institute at Rocket Center is now in place at Keyser High School.
Mineral County superintendent of schools Rob Woy announced Tuesday at the board of education meeting that Mineral Fabrication in the Keyser Industrial Park had assisted in moving the equipment from RCBI to Keyser High on Monday.
Tuesday, he visited the school to inspect the equipment.
"It looks really good," he said, noting that the next step is to "bring electricity to the equipment and to try to hire a teacher."
The equipment - including nine engine lathes, nine milling machines, a surface grinder, a bandsaw, a metal shaving dumpster, and a CNC toolroom lathe - was used in the machinist program at RCBI. When RCBI officials announced, however, that the program had been discontinued and the equipment would be transferred out of the area, both the county school system and the Mineral County Development Authority began a campaign to keep it in Mineral County.
At the Aug. 6 meeting, Woy announced that the equipment would be housed in a wing at Keyser High School that had originally been designed for technical programs.
"There is no real feasible place to put it at the Technical Center," he said.
Tuesday, Woy said he is hopeful that the county will be able to have a teacher in place in order to be able to offer classes beginning with the second semester.
And although the equipment will be housed at KHS, Woy said in August that Frankfort students will have the opportunity to ride the bus to Keyser to take the classes.
"It's great to have this equipment, and we're appreciative of the opportunity," he said.
