  • Burgess-led Devils rip Roane County, 41-12

  • RAVENSWOOD – Senior quarterback Heath Burgess had his best night as a Red Devils to date, Friday night at Flinn Field, running for two touchdowns and passing for two more as Ravenswood ripped Roane County, 41-12, to move to 2-0 on the young season.
    Burgess scored on runs of 16 (reaching the football over the pylon on second effort) and 12 yards and tossed highlight reel scoring passes of 25 yards to Rhys Jelich and 59 yards to tight end Isaac Crow. For the night, Burgess ran six times for 37 yards and completed six of 10 passes for 149 yards.
    Coach Mick Price’s Red Devils dominated the first half, scored 27 unanswered points. Burgess’s first TD of the night capped a two-play, 22-yard drive set up by senior Devon Crews’s 28-yard punt return. Burgess covered the final 16 yards on a keeper around right end, dancing through defenders and reaching the football over the front pylon with a final second effort lunge. Senior Nathan Cunningham booted the PAT and Ravenswood led 7-0.
    The Devils’ immediately went for the jugular by pulling off a perfect onside kick by Cumnningham that was recovered by Preston Humphreys at the Roane 40. Junior Rhys Jelich hauled in a highlight reel 25-yard over the shoulder pass from Burgess to cap a seven-play, 40-yard scoring march. Burgess was tackled on the two-point conversion try after the Devils were assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to the PAT. And apparent foul during the TD pass reception was not called on Roane. With 10:28 left in the first half, the Devils led 13-0.
    A little over seven minutes later, Burgess hooked up with junior tight end Isaac Crow on another highlight reel scoring pass, as Crow got a block from junior wideout Thomas Sturm and raced 59 yards for the touchdown to cap an eight-play, 83-yard scoring march. Cunningham’s PAT boot made it 20-0 with 3:01 left in the half.
    Senior Jordan Saunders then made the special teams play of the night, hustling to pick-up a shanked Roane punt and racing 45 yards down the home sideline for a touchdown with 1:14 left in the half. Cunningham’s PAT kick made to 27-0 at the break.
    Shellshocked Roane County finally got on the scoreboard as the third quarter wound down off a fumble recovery by Luke Scott. Scotty Fox hauled in a 25-yard TD pass from Cody May deflected off teammate Tylker King’s hand for a touchdown. The pass for two points was broken by a diving Red Devil senior cornerback Austin Hileman in the front corner of the end zone. With 1:59 left in the third quarter, Ravenswood led 27-6.
    The Red Devils answered quickly as Rhys Jelich scored his second touchdown of the night on a 16-yard run to cap a six-play, 64-yard drive with 11:02 left in the fourth quarter. Cunningham’s PAT kick made it 34-6.
    Page 2 of 3 - Burgess scored his second TD of the night less than three minutes later with 8:34 left in the game on a 12-yard run. The scoring jaunt capped a quick, two-play, 68-yard drive. Cunningham’s fifth PAT pick of the night made it 41-6.
    Raider Luke Scott capped the game scoring with a five-yard TD run with 1:29 left to cap a 13-play, 84-yard drive. The kick attempt failed to made the final score 41-12.
    Devon Crews led the Ravenswood rushing attack with 12 carries for 68 yards. Rhys Jelcih added nine carries for 48 yards (TD); Heath Burgess, six carries for 37 yards (two TDS); Ben Johnson, six carries for 23 yards; Damien Caldwell, one carry for 11 yards; Hayden Mandrake, one carry for eight yards; Alex Casto, one carry for three yards; and Preston Humphreys, one carry for one yard. As a team, the Red Devils carried 37 times for 199 yards with three TDs.
    Heath Burgess completed six of 10 passes for 149 yardsx with two TDs. Isaac Crow caight three passes for 93 yards with a TD; Rhys Jelich, one for 25 yards and a TD; Devon Crews, one for 20 yards; and Ben Johnson, one for 11 yards.
    Ravenswood totaled 348 offensive yards with 16 first downs (13 via rush and three via pass) and drew five flags for 43 yards.
    Luke Scott led the Raiders rushing attack with 24 carries for 139 yards and a TD. Cody May added 16 carries for 40 yards; Tyler May, five carries for 21 yards; Steven McGinnis, two carries for six yards; and Drew Kinder, one carry for no gain. Roane County totaled 48 carries for 206 rushing yards.
    Cody May completed two of eight passes for 46 yards and a TD. Scotty Fox had one catch for 25 yards (TD); and Tyler King one for 21 yards.
    Roane County totaled 252 offensive yards with 15 first downs (13 via rush and two via pass) and drew five flags for 35 yards.
    Ravenswood did not punt the football in the game. Devon Crews had two punt returns for 53 yards; and Jordan Saunders, one for 45 yards and a TD.
    Nathan Cunningham kicked off seven times with a 50.7-yard average per kickoff. Matt Peery had two kickoff returns for 43 yards. Cunningham had one for no gain on an onside kick recovery.
    Defensively, Matt Peery led the way with eight tackles (including a tackle for loss). Connor Jelich added seven tackles; Ben Johnson (fumble recovery) six; Matt Starcher (sack) and Rhys Jelich, five each; Isaac Crow (sack, TFL) and Nathan Cunningham, four each ; Austin Hileman (two PBUs), Heath Burgess (PBU) and Kyle Hickman, three each; Willy Parsons, Jordan Saunders and Hayden Mandrake, two each; and Dylan Radabaugh, Roy Bush, Thomas Sturm, Damien Caldwell, Preston Humphreys and Aaron Parsons, one tackle each.
    Ravenswood (2-0) travels to Wayne (2-0) Friday night taken on the two-time defending state champion Pioneers in a battle of unbeaten AA teams. The Pioneers ran roughshod over the Red Devils 84-42 last year at Flinn Field in showdown of ranked AA unbeatens.
