  • PSC sets tribute to Dr. John Hawkins

  • KEYSER –A tribute titled “Celebration of Life Through Music” will be held for the late John Hawkins, Ph.D., former music professor at Potomac State College of West Virginia University, on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m., in the Church-McKee Arts Center.

  • KEYSER –A tribute titled "Celebration of Life Through Music" will be held for the late John Hawkins, Ph.D., former music professor at Potomac State College of West Virginia University, on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m., in the Church-McKee Arts Center.
    The community is invited to attend this free event.
    The Potomac State College/Community Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Fred Kesner will perform during the first half of the program. Among their selections will be a composition by local musician Jim Roderick titled "Elegy for Doc." The jazz band's pianist, Ed Morgret, will also be featured on "Prayer Meetin'," a gospel style jazz piece. Highlights also include Pittsburgh saxophonist and close friend of Dr. Hawkins, Curtis Johnson, who will perform with the PSC Jazz Ensemble as well as a jazz combo.
    The second half of the program will be a reunion of cast members performing their signature songs from previous musicals directed by Dr. Hawkins and Tom Valentine.
    Selections will include the following:
    1999 - "Grease" - Sophie Davis will sing "Freddy My Love."
    2000 - "Godspell" - Laura Becker Groves will sing "Day by Day."
    2001 - "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" - Jon Fritz will sing "Any Dream Will Do."
    2002 - "Jesus Christ Superstar" - Ken Nolan will sing "Heaven on Their Mind."
    2003 - "Little Shop of Horrors" - Jamie Carter will sing "Grow for Me."
    2004 - "Footloose" - Beau Hartman will sing "Let's Hear It for the Boy."
    2005 - "Bye Bye Birdie" - Josh Arnold will sing "Sincere."
    2006 - "Cats" - Lura Thompson will sing "Memory," and Kimberli Rowley and /Heidi Gardner will sing "McCavity."
    2007 - "Chicago" - Allison Abrahams will sing "If You're Good to Mama."
    2008 - "Pippin" - Jimmy Corley will sing "Magic to Do."
    2009 - "The Wizard of Oz" - Jim House will sing "If I Only Had a Heart."
    2010 - "Beauty and the Beast" -Alex McDonald will sing "Be Our Guest."
    2011 - "My Fair Lady" - Melissa Tucker will sing "Could Have Danced All Night," Ron Growden will sing "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face."
    2012 - "Oklahoma" - Danise Whitlock will sing "I Cain't Say No."
    2013 - "McNeil's Rangers" - Kevin Shreve will sing "Drummer Boy," and Kourtni High and Hunter Martin will sing "Time I Was a Bride."
    2014 - "Les Miserables" - The cast will sing "One Day More."
    A goodwill offering to benefit the American Cancer Society will be collected.
