After Lindsey Vonn seriously injured herself while skiing in Austria earlier this year, she was expected to be back on the slopes in November. But it now looks like she could be back as early as this weekend.
In February, Vonn crashed in the super G during the 2013 World Championships in Austria, injuring her right knee. She underwent major knee surgery and physical therapy in hopes of being able to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. ''I've had crashes that were honestly much worse than this one,'' Vonn told the Associated Press on Wednesday.
Vonn, who won a gold and bronze medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics, now plans on going skiing over the holiday weekend in Portillo, Chile alongside the U.S. team to test her limits. ''I wouldn't change my odds, just because I was injured,'' Vonn said of being ready for the Olympics. ''I'm going to be back just as good, if not better, than I was before.''
Discussing her recovery, Vonn also thanked her boyfriend, Tiger Woods, who underwent major knee surgery several years ago. ''It was great to have him help me through it,'' she told the news agency. ''It's been a slow process. I'm not very good at being patient, either. But he helped me with that.''
As for getting back to competing, Vonn hopes to hit the slopes in Beaver Creek, Colo., for a competition in November. ''I want to make sure that I've done what I want to do in my sport. I don't want to leave skiing early,'' she said. ''I want to feel like I've done everything I can do. So, we'll see.''
