PARKERSBURG - Something happened on the way to football season. Ravenswood High School student-athlete Devon Crews developed a real passion for baseball.
After the Red Devils baseball season ended, Crews committed himself to Post 15 of American Legion's Area 3, which also includes Beckley Post 32 and South Charleston Post 94.
"I really developed a love for the game of baseball. I just want to keep getting better," said Crews prior to Post 15's opener.
All that the powerful slugger did was lead Post 15 in nearly every offensive category. The 5-foot-9 195 pound running back for the Red Devil football team hit (.468) in (91) at bats while mashing (42) hits with eight doubles and a triple. He scored (21) runs and drove in (26). Crews' slugging percentage was a cool (.571). All of these statistics led Post 15 in 2013.
Post 15 team manager Jim Goodwin was more than a little impressed with the slugger, who is entering his senior year where he will have one more year of high school ball for coach Wes Swain.
"We played him at shortstop, third base and even in the outfield. He has soft hands and a good arm. He has a consistent glove and ranges well to the ball. As a hitter, he has quick hands and good instincts. What more can you ask of a kid?"
He added, "He is a leader. He is quiet but he leads by example and I like the way he goes about his business."
Post 15 finished (23-16) in its 90th season on the diamond. Look for Crews on the gridiron for Ravenswood High this season. He is sure to deliver the hits as opposed to collecting them.
