  • When women get together to accomplish things, things get accomplished. This is especially true if the women are members of the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) of Ripley. And they've been accomplishing many things for the past 91 years. This year is no different.
Many worthy projects and organizations benefited from the efforts of the GFWC. As part of the annual Relay for Life, under the guidance of one club member and with the help of other members, over 1000 luminaries were set up, spelling out the word "Hope" which was part of a very touching portion of the evening.
By participating in the annual Community Foundation Charity Walk, money for Ripley High School scholarships was raised, helping two students achieve their dream of going to college. In addition, the club always supports Project Graduation.
Children are always an important focus of the club. From sponsoring a student for Junior Conservation Camp to supporting the Landau Eugene Murphy concert to benefit CASA, the club always looks for ways to help children. Sometimes it's as simple as donating shoes to school children in cooperation with the Ravenswood Women's Club or donating supplies for a children's therapy clinic and giving clothes and books to the Family Crisis Intervention Center Kids First Program, in partnership with the First Presbyterian Church of Ripley.
This help doesn't stop at the local level either. The club supports the Nicaragua Mission with Calvary United Methodist Church and the National Operation Smile program.
The Ripley Library has seen great support over the years from the GFWC of Ripley and that support continued this year.
A fun Christmas auction was held at the December club dinner with most of the proceeds going to the library. In addition, the club helps maintain and clean the flower beds at the library and several members enjoyed helping with the library's book sale.
The BoMar Club has received help from the club as well. The provision of food and clothes by club members has greatly benefited those who take advantages of the services this fine organization offers to those recovering from alcoholism and other addictions.
Perhaps the most rewarding activity that the club involves itself in also involves children. Reading Aloud to children in Karla Harris's classroom at Fairplain Elementary has been a blessing to the children and to the members who have taken part. The children and the club member look forward every week to the book and getting to see each other.
Helping with all the various projects and organizations takes a lot of time, energy, and money. The Club is known for its BBQ take-out luncheon in the fall. Many businesses in town look forward to this each year. At the Ripley's On Sale – Believe It or Not Community Wide Yard Sale", sponsored by Main Street Ripley, there is always a Women's Club rummage and bake sale booth.
