  • CHARLESTON – "In the money"
When it comes to horse racing terms that means a top three finish.
On the day of the Preakness – the second leg of horse racing's triple crown – Ravenswood High's Hailey Miller was indeed "In the money."
In what was the 39th edition of the West Virginia State High School Track and Field Meet for girls, Miller, just a sophomore, finished third in the grueling 400 meters for Class AA.
She broke one minute in the one-lap sprint as the sun started to add plenty of steam to the University of Charleston Stadium oval. Her finish accounted for Ravenswood's six points on the Class AA girls scoreboard.
Miller's third place time was 59.86 putting her just behind Frankfort star Bria Welker (who won three individual events and helped lead the Lady Falcons to their first-ever title) and Alexis Burch of Oak Glen. Welker had a time of 57.13 and Burch was clocked at 58.51.
Both Welker and Burch are seniors. Miller was one of three sophomores in the top six of the 400.
It was a nice way for the Devilette sophomore to wrap up her second season of varsity track and field. Last season at the State Meet she just missed scoring (top six produce points) in the 400 by finishing seventh.
Miller also qualified for the State Meet in the 100 meters. She ran a 13.46 on Friday evening in time trials but didn't advance into Saturday's finals.
Fellow sophomore Taylor Treadway also represented Ravenswood at the State Meet and placed tenth (the top six score) in two events. Treadway ran a 12:49.16 on Friday in the 3200 meters and a 5:42 Saturday in the 1600 meters.
Treadway was one of four sophomores in the 3200 field that had 15 runners. There were seven seniors, two juniors and a pair of freshman. In the 1600, she was among a group of five sophomores. The race, which had 16 runners, also featured seven seniors, three juniors and a freshman.
The experience at the State Meet will no doubt be helpful for Ravenswood's talented duo both when next season rolls around.
