Ravenswood's Girls' Tennis Trio of Taylor Youell, Bess McNabb and Alex McNabb rolled into Day 2 of the West Virginia State Class AA-A Tennis Tournament with impressive, and, in two of three cases, heart-palpitating wins at the Charleston Catholic Tennis Complex Thursday. The early rounds of the AA-A tournament were moved to Charleston Catholic Tennis Complex due to court conditions at Coonskin Park. Play will continue there (CC) Friday unless inclement weather chases yhe matches indoors at the Charleston YMCA. Youell, unbeaten at No 2 Singles in 2013 who entered the state tournament as the No. 3 seed, blew past Krista Harris of Independence in the quarterfinals after receiving a first-round bye. Youell blitzed to a 8-0 win. She now faces No. 2 seed Christina Centofani of Charleton Catholinc in the championship semifinals Friday with a championship match berth at stake. The top half of her bracket was Upset Central, as No. 1 Seed Alex Lewis of Bluefield lost to Courtney Mobley of Poca and No. 4 seed Brittany Alexander of Grafton fell to Olivia Haught of Ritchie County. Mobley and Haught will tangle for the other championship final berth in No. 2 Singles. At No. 3 Singles, Junior Bess McNabb did it again! McNabb, who knocked off the No. 1 seed in last weekend's Region I Tourament, repeated that feat Thursday in Charleston by dismissing state No. 1 seed Sarah Brady of Bluefield, 9-7. McNabb overcame a scoring glitch that incorrectly had the score at 4-3 rather than 5-2 in her favor on a mix-up in which the opponents played three games before a changeover. McNabb weathered the controversy and settled down to rally from 7-6 down and win the final three games and the match. The win sends McNabb into the championship semifinals Friday. A t No. 1 Doubles, the tandem of seniors Alex McNabb and Taylor Youell also won in dramatic fashion. McNabb and Youell led 4-1 over Dransfield/Karimpour of St. Joseph, but the St. Joe duo battled back and led 6-5. McNabb and Youell then went on a three-game tear to win the match 8-6. They will face No. 4 seeded Alexis Alastanos/Jenna McKee of Bridgeport in the championship quarterfinals early Friday morning. State championship matches will be played Saturday at Schoenbaum Tennis Center in Kanawha City.
