  • Ravenswood boys' doubles teams knocked off region's best, girls roll

  • ST. MARYS – Ravenswood Boys' Tennis doubles teams pulled off stunning upsets for the top Class AA/A Region I teams from St. Marys Monday on the road and the Ravenswood girls continued their surge with a 7-0 win over the Blue Devils.
    At No. 1 Doubles, Ravenswood's Ethan Cross and Sean Matics knocked off the top team of Sam Maston and Drew Poling, 8-6.
    Following suit, Michael Danishanko and Elias McKown then handed the previously unbeaten St. Marys duo of Marcus Moore and A.J. Harris their first season loss by an identical 8-6 count.
    Logan Tucker and Kurt Tennant barely missed making it a doubles sweep by falling 9-7 to Blue Devils Eli Stewart and Nicholas Beaty after trailing 7-2.
    St. Marys won the boys' match 5-2, as the Blue Devils swept the singles matches. Maston beat Cross, 8-3, at No. 2 Singles; Poling blanked Matics, 8-0, at No. 2 Singles; Moorebeat Danishanko, 8-2, at No. 3 Singles; and Harris beat Tucker, 8-1, at No. 4 Singles.
    St. Marys is now 12-1 on the season, while Ravenswood is 3-5.
    On the girls' side, it was Ravenswood sweep, 7-0.
    At No. 1 Singles, Alex McNabb defeated Jaime Graham, 8-2.
    At No. 2 Singles, Taylor Youell rolled past Abigale Gellner, 8-0.
    At No. 3 Singles, Bess McNabb blanked Sarah Everett, 8-0.
    At. No. 4 Singles, Kerigan Crow won by forfeit.
    In Doubles, A.McNabb/Youell bageled Graham/Gellner, 8-0.
    B.McNabb/Crow and Jordan Danko/Jordan Matics won by forfeit.
    Ravenswood's girls are now 5-3 on the season.
    "It's been great to see our teams improve these past three matches," said Coach Butch Varney. "Tonight our boys #1 and #2 doubles upset the best teams in the region. In fact, our #2 doubles gave them their first loss. And our #3 team came back from being down 7-2 and just lost 9-7.Coach (Jim) Frazier and I are extremely happy to see that our focus is ready for the regionals. We are proud of our boys' and girls' teams."
    Saturday at home, Ravenswood's girls rolled past visiting Weirton Madonna, 6-1.In Singles, No. 1 Alex McNabb (leading 5-2) won by default over Amy Davis. No. 2 Taylor Youell defeated Ali Welch, 8-4; No. 3 Bess McNabb beat Tina Conforti, 8-5. No. 4 Kerigan Crow dropped a 8-3 decision to Morgan Duerr.
    In Doubles, A. McNabb/Youell defeated Welch/Conforti, 8-5; B. McNabb/Crow defeated Duerr/E. Conforti, 8-2; and Jordan Matics/Kendra Vaughn defeated Annie Frankoutch/Eva Brower, 8-5.
    Madonna's boys rolled past Ravenswood 6-1.
    In Singles, Nick Conforti defeated Ethan Cross, 8-2; Matt Conforti blanked Sean Matics, 8-0; Alan Alimario edged Michael Danishanko, 8-6; and Thomas Gianni beat Logan Tucker, 8-1.
    In Doubles, Conforti/Conforti beat Cross/Matics, 8-2; Alimario/Gianna defeated Danishanko/McKown, 8-4; and Ravenswood's Ticker/Kurt Tennant won by forfeit.
