RAVENSWOOD - Good things come to those who wait but Red Devil Baseball coach Wes Swain may tell you that it would be less stressful to take control of a game in the early innings. Then again, it wouldn't be as thrilling that way, would it?
Down 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Heath Burgess started a rally when he led off with a walk and was forced out on a fielder's choice at second base off of a hit by Jesse Brown. Zach Miller came in to pinch run and Thomas Sturm blasted a triple to score him.
Coach Swain put on a suicide squeeze play with Nick Ballard at the plate and while it didn't go as planned, it got the job done as Sturm scored and tied the game for the Red Devils.
Will Schindler then laId down a textbook bunt that he beat out and Ballard moved to third. Freshman Logan Jarrett came to the plate with the game on the line and smacked a daisy cutter up the middle to drive in Ballard for the game-winning hit.
It was a packed sunny afternoon at Wright Field and the Devils (5-8) gave the healthy crowd all the excitement they could handle on this day.
The Tigers beat Ravenswood four times last season and it was a great feeling at the ballpark for a Red Devil team that has already surpassed last season's win total.
Heath Burgess threw a gutsy game for the Devils and attacked the strike zone. He gave up five hits and three runs (only one earned) and struck out eight Tigers in the process. Burgess also stars as the Red Devil quarterback and a talented wing man for coach Price's Runnin' Red Devil basketball team.
Logan Jarrett was 2-for-4 and was credited with the game winning RBI, Will Schindler was 1-for-2 with an RBI, Isaac Crow was 1-for-3, Jesse Brown and Zach Miller scored a run, Thomas Sturm went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk and Nick Ballard scored a run.
"I couldn't be happier for our team for never giving up and getting this win," said Coach Swain. The Devils travel to Parkersburg Catholic this evening.
