RIPLEY – While there were some postponements, Ripley's Lady Viking softball team got in its share of game action during spring break.

The week concluded on Friday with an easy 9-1 win over Grafton at Lady Viking Park. The win put Ripley at 9-2 on the season.

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, Ripley struck for five runs in the second and went on for the victory in five innings. The Lady Vikings belted out nine hits to go along with their nine runs.

Kelsey Moore, Ashli Mellinger and Dusti Fisher each had a pair of hits for Ripley. Mellinger was credited with an RBI as was Hannah Ford, who was 1-2 in the contest. Sapphire Parsons and Chelsey Hager collected a hit for the Lady Vikings.
"They (Grafton) had played Wirt and were looking for another game in the area," said Lady Viking head coach Ken Swisher of the addition to the Ripley schedule. "We were happy to get another game."

Darby Petersen pitched two innings for Ripley, allowing two hits and striking out two. Karly Fitzsimmons went three innings for Ripley and gave up the other two Grafton hits.

On Thursday, Ripley faced off with both Sissonville and Pt. Pleasant at home.

Ripley saw a 2-1 lead evaporate in the top of the sixth when Sissonville pushed across four runs and went on to post a 5-2 win."

The Lady Indians collected 12 hits in the game while Ripley managed just six. Both teams committed four errors.
Mellinger was 1-3 for Ripley with an RBI.

Hager absorbed the loss for Ripley. "She pitched a fine game," said Swisher.

The Lady Vikings rebounded later in the day to knock off Pt. Pleasant, 4-3.

"Both Sissonville and Pt. Pleasant are excellent teams," said Swisher. "We were tickled that Sissonville came to our place for a game. Both games were well-played."

In the bottom of the sixth against Pt. Pleasant, Fisher got a double and later moved to third. A suicide squeeze by Ford brought Fisher home for what proved to be the winning run in a game that saw both teams trade the lead back and forth.Ford, who was 2-3, and Hager also had doubles for Ripley.

Peterson was the winning pitcher for the Lady Vikings.

"I was very pleased with our younger players who were filling in for some starters against Pt. Pleasant," Swisher said. "They really settled down in the game."

Ripley had two games postponed on Saturday with Beckley and Shady Spring. The Beckley contest will be made up on April 16.

The Lady Vikings are slated for a home showdown with Capital today (Tuesday).

Ripley also got a junior varsity win over Grafton on Friday, 15-0. Brittani Hancock and Ashton Devereux each had two hits in the win. Parsons, Maddie Hinzman, Reiley Simpkins, Delaney Parsons, Mickie Daugherty, Fisher and Tori Anderson also had hits.
