It was a good day on the court Saturday for Ripley's tennis teams.
The Lady Vikings took two matches from South Charleston and Greenbrier East in shutout fashion, 7-0. The Viking boys squad knocked off SC, 4-3, and topped GE, 5-2.
"We introduced ourselves to the new region and our girls rolled," Greg Varney, Ripley's head tennis coach said following the weekend victories. "Our girls only lost one game in seven matches in our win over South Charleston. We started slow against East, but finished strong."
The Lady Vikings moved to 3-0 with the wins. Emily Munson (No. 1), Kaitlyn White (No. 2), Brooke King (No. 3) and Arin Shatto (No. 4) won singles matches. In doubles, the duos of Munson/White (No.1), Shatto/Tyler Barickmanen (No. 2) and King/Megan Frampton (No. 3) all registered wins.
"The boys picked up two hard-fought wins," Varney said as the Vikings moved to 2-1. "Our doubles teams picked up five out of six wins and we relied on No. 3 seed Jacob Haynes (who won both of his singles matches)."
Against South Charleston, Derek Hill also got a win in this No. 2 singles showdown. Logan Reynolds/Hill captured the No. 1 doubles match while Haynes/Parker Lively were winners at No. 2. In addition to Haynes, Jordan Ullom garnered a singles win in the No. 4 match against Greenbrier East. Reynolds/Hill at No. 1, Haynes/Lively at No. 2 doubles and J.J. Mahan/Baylee VanKirk at No. 3. all earned wins.
