ROCKET CENTER - Alliant Tech is leveling off property south of Route 956 in anticipation of future expansion of the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory plant.
With no more room available for expansion at the existing plant complex, ATK is improving about 20 acres of land across the road, essentially flattening an area for future development and installing required drainage systems and other features.
ATK officials said that while the company has no immediate plans for the property, the work "provides options for potential industrial base growth."
In addition to grading, the project involves construction of two new storage magazines for explosives, which will replace older storage units at ATK, which manufactures advanced weaponry, ammunition and other military hardware.
According to ATK, the work is generating about $6 million for the local economy, including 35 construction jobs. The work, which began in July, is expected to wrap up this summer.
