Ernest Fred Shuman 89, of Arthurdale, WV passed away on Feb 26, 2013 at Windy Hill Village with his family by his side.
He was born on October 14, 1923 in Fairview, WV a son of the late Emory Loyd and Susanna (Poe) Shuman. His family was an original Arthurdale Homestead family.
He graduated from Arthurdale High School in 1943 and was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII serving on the S.S. Eugene Field and S. S. Jim Bridger. After his WWII service, he worked as a heavy equipment operator, coal miner, and as a supervisor at Kaiser Aluminum Ravenswood Works.
He also owned Shuman’s Mobile Home Park.
He was a volunteer for Ravenswood Little League, Boy Scouts of America, and Trustee for the 1st United Methodist Church of Ravenswood.
Fred was a member of Silverton Grange 506 and Preston Lodge #90 AF & AM. He was also a member of the Arthurdale Community Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Geraldine (Field) Shuman; two sons: Brad (Paula) Shuman of Lake Placid, FL and Scott Shuman (Missy Gearhart) of Lehigh Acres, FL; four grandchildren: David Shuman, Shelly Shuman, Kim (Chris) Higginbotham, Carrie Shuman (Shawn Wells), great-grandchildren: Alexis, Emily, C.J.; two sisters: Ellie Shuman Williams and Wanna Shuman Engle, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; son Freddie Shuman, Jr.; four brothers: Emmel Shuman, Elias Shuman, Emory Shuman, and Emitt Bill Shuman; and two sisters: Maxine Shuman Born, Margie Shuman Overfield.
Friends were received at the Morgan Funeral Home, Reedsville, WV on Thursday, February 28, 2013. Funeral services were in the funeral home chapel Friday March 1, 2013. Rev. Steven Allman officiated.
Full military honors were provided by Preston County VFW Honor Guard, Preston County Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 977 and US Navy Honor Detail.
Fred’s brothers of Preston Lodge #90 AF&AM served as Bearers and conduct Masonic graveside services. Interment at Morgan Memorial Park, Reedsville.
