  • RAVENSWOOD – The girls' basketball postseason wars begin next week.
In a stunner locally at least, Ravenswood's Red Devilettes (15-7) have been seeded No. 2 for next week's Class AA Region 1, Section 2 Tournament.
Ravenswood will face No. 3-seed Webster County (13-8) on Wednesday (February 20) at the RvHS Physical Education Building (new gym) at 7 p.m. in a sectional semifinal game.
Coach Cara Williams' Devilettes (ranked No. 11 in Class AA in the latest AP Poll and No. 13 in the Coaches' Poll) defeated Coach Sharon Baird's Highlanders, 66-44, at The Pit on January 12.
No. 4-seed Ritchie County (10-9) will host No. 5-seed Roane County (4-15) in the opening game of the sectional tournament Monday (February 18).
The winner of that initial elimination game will then travel to Sutton to take on the No. 1-seeded Braxton County Eagles (14-7), led by senior forward Hunter Sodaro, on Wednesday night in the other sectional semifinal game.
The sectional tournament championship game will be played Friday, February 22, at 7 p.m. on the home court of the highest remaining seed.
Should Ravenswood beat Webster and the Ritchie County-Roane County winner knock off Braxton County, the championship game will be played at the RvHS new gym on Friday night.
But if Braxton County wins their semifinal, the title tilt will be played at Sutton on the Lady Eagles' home court at the Braxton County Armory, regardless of who emerges as the victor of the Devilettes-Highlanders semifinal.
Looking at the rest of the sectional tournament field, the Devilettes beat Roane County twice, split games with Ritchie County and have not played Braxton County this season.
And for what it's worth, common Devilettes-Eagles opponents include Wirt County, Fairmont Senior, Roane County, Gilmer County, Webster County and Williamstown.
Both teams beat Wirt County twice; both teams lost to Fairmont Senior (Ravenswood, 47-45 and Braxton, 62-41); both teams beat Roane County (Ravenswood twice and Braxton, 55-45); both teams beat Webster County (Braxton twice, 60-43 and 60-46); Ravenswood beat Gilmer County, 63-54, while Braxton lost twice, 53-42 and 46-40; ad Ravenswood split games with Williamstown, while Braxton lost in the LKC fifth-place game, 74-36.
Tickets for Wednesday's Devilettes-Highlanders sectional semifinal game are $5 each at the door.
