  • Ruben to speak at Ripley Main Street Fundraiser

  • RIPLEY - There is no individual who has more knowledge and passion for the history of Ripley High School athletics than Mike Ruben.
    "Rube" will be making a public speaking appearance on Saturday March 9 at Ripley Main Street's annual spaghetti dinner/auction and fundraiser.
    The event will take place at the Fellowship Center of Epworth United Methodist Church in Ripley at 6:00 p.m.
    Ruben will take attendees on a stroll down memory lane as the theme of the evening will be, Victory to the Vikings: Reflections of Ripley High School Sports.
    The evening will be highlighted with photos of Ripley athletes and teams throughout the school's existence.
    Ruben is the former publisher of Jackson Newspapers, producer and writer of the 2007 historical drama "Ripley - The Man & The Town That Honors His Name", the current special projects editor of The State Journal including Country Roads Journal, founder of the Viking Voices Scholarship and has been the public address voice of Viking athletics for the last 35 years.
    "I've always been fascinated by the history of Ripley High and the Viking sports teams. I'm sure that I'll learn even more from those attending the Main Street event," said Ruben.
    Ripley Main Street Program Director Paula Casto is excited about the event and pleased with the community's response.
    "It is going to be a wonderful evening of events and a fun walk through Viking sports history. We encourage anyone with older Ripley High sports photos that they would like to contribute to please contact us. All of your photos will be returned," said Casto.
    Ripley Main Street is a non profit 501c (3) organization uses opportunities such as this event to raise funding and awareness to continue the successful projects in the area of economic revitalization including but are not limited to: Annual Easter Egg Hunt, Ripley Fund Day and Health Fair, Holiday Promotions, Parade Activities, Firecracker Race, Ripley's on Sale – A Community Wide Yard Sale, Golf Tournament, Streetscape Projects and to improve the physical appearance and safety of the downtown. A portion of all fundraising efforts are used as matching funds for the above projects.
    Due to limited seating only 200 tickets are available and can be purchased by calling the Main Street Ripley office at 304-373-1637. Tickets are $10 per person. Please call Paula Casto at 304-373-1637 if you have photos or memorabilia to contribute to the event.
