Marjorie Lorraine (Simmons) Duckworth, May 17, 1924 to January 31, 2013.
She was born in Gassaway, WV to the late Mabel McTheny Simmons and Charles O. Simmons, of Sugar Creek, Braxton County.
She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty seven years, Burlin S. Duckworth, on December 8, 2012.
She is survived by sons, Lawrence Dowe Duckworth of Atlanta, GA and Roger Lee Duckworth of Chattanooga, TN; Grandchildren, Matthew Duckworth, Dr. Cheryl Duckworth, Kristen Parker, Dr. Rebecca Forkner, Dr. Ben Duckworth and Stacy Mason. Her six great grandchildren, Madeline Mason, Lauren Mason, Annabelle Parker, Mabel Forkner, Sam Parker, and Caroline Duckworth. Also surviving are her siblings, Betty Conrad of Sugar Creek and James Simmons and wife Louise of Gassaway; and aunt to Lisa Marshall and son Jake.
According to family and friends Marjorie was a great mother, spouse and sister.
She attended a one-room school on Sugar Creek, then graduated from Gassaway High School.
During the war she was a “Rosie Riveter,” working in a defense plant in Charleston. After the war she married and raised two sons with the constant goal of insuring that her sons achieved top notch education. After a few years of living at Cabin Creek, Marjorie and Stewart moved to Cleveland, OH so that they could give their sons more opportunities.
The sons did, graduating with degrees from West Point, Marshall, Central Michigan, National Defense University and Virginia Tech; and both are Army veterans.
All of her five grandchildren are college graduates and three of the five have earned doctorate degrees. Marjorie attended the Sugar Creek Baptist Church.
Her sons want all to know that she was a wonderful mother and is already missed.
Services were Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway. Rev. Bennie Criger officiated.
Burial was in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway.
