WILLIAMSTOWN – Scoring runs in the game of basketball are great if they are going your way.
Williamstown put together a nice one on Tuesday night at home against Ravenswood leading to a 51-41 victory.
After a sluggish start, Williamstown scored the final six points of the opening period at home with Ravenswood and then the first 15 of the second quarter. It was a 21-0 run that the Red Devils could never quite recover from in falling to the Yellowjackets.
The Red Devils were gunning for a second win over their Little Kanawha Conference North rival during the month of January.
Early on, that looked to be quite the possibility.
The Devils shot out to a 17-5 advantage before Williamstown knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to get the deficit to within six as the period came to a close.
"That was a killer," said a frustrated Ravenswood head coach Mick Price. "We had control of the game and the ball. Instead of working the clock, we put up bad shots. They got the ball both times and went down and hit those 3s. Now they are within striking distance."
Ravenswood would never lead again thanks to Williamstown's impressive run. As close as the Devils could get the rest of the way was one point. "We were down one and had the ball on two different occasions, but couldn't capitalize," Price said.
The loss sends Ravenswood to 4-9 on the season while Williamstown improved to 4-10. It was Williamstown's second straight win after 10 consecutive losses.
Jake Martin led Ravenswood in scoring with 18 points. Dalton Gandee also hit double figures for the Devils with 10. Heath Burgess added nine in the loss with Dylan Radabaugh and Jon Crow each scoring two.
Ravenswood was 18-of-44 from the floor and 3-of-4 at the free throw line.
Williamstown outrebounded the Red Devils, 24-15. Martin and Crow each had seven rebounds in the loss. Each team committed seven turnovers in the game. Ravenswood had six steals and five assists.
Ravenswood will return to action on Thursday facing off with Ritchie County.
In the junior varsity game, Ravenswood fell by a final of 35-21. Travis Rawson was Ravenswood's top scorer with 12.
