  • Ravenswood’s Red Devils will again be young on the mats this wrewstling season, but a quartet of juniors will look to make an impact in the LKC and Class AA/A. Leading the way will be Matt Wood (126) who nearly turned the Class AA/A Region In Tournament on its year in 2012 by almo.st pinning top seed Alex Suite of Clay Couhnty in the opening round before an injury stoppage allowed Suite to recover and score a win by fall. Wood finished fifth, just missing out on a state tournament berth as the alternate. He posted 15-21 record as a sophomore. Also back is junior Pat Berry (170), who posted a 12-23 season record in 2012, but is much improved headed into the 2012-2013 season. Berry is also a standout soccer player. Another junior looking to make his mark on the mats is junior Nathan Cunningham (160), already a two-sport (soccer and football) star this year. Another junior Jordan Saunders (152) returns and should have a better year with another year’s experience under his belt. “Those four juniors worked hard in the off season and have attended camps in preparation for this season,” said head coach Matt Bender. Damien Caldwell (138) is another experienced returnee for the team, Caldwell was 4-24 in his first year of wrestling and should also be improved this season. Noticeably absent from the Red Devil squad is Billy Knicely (285), a two-time state tournament qualifier who finished fourth in 2012 at The Big Show. Knicely suffered a dislocated kneecap in the second game of the football season, but returned to play for the Red Devils late in the season wearing a heavy knee brace. Also missing is Donavyn Estep, an promising wrestler in 2012, who excelled on the defensive line for the football Red Devils this past fall and Mason Carte, an All-State soccer playing senior who handled place-kicking duties for the Devil football team. Willy Parsons (285), who has mat experience from 2012, had a standout year in football and is back to take over the heavyweight post for the Devils this season. Other team members include Pat Boggs (106), Jameson Cooper (113), Shaun Rogers (120), Kaleb Horn (126), Michael Sullivan (132), Austin Roub (145) and Sam Miles (152). Lee Lauderman, a high school standout at Williamstown, is the new assistant coach for the Red Devils.
