RAVENSWOOD – Coach Cara Williams' Ravenswood Red Devilettes rode a quick start by senior Taylor Youell, who scored the first five points of the game, to a 22-9 first quarter scoring bulge and never looked back in winning their 2012-2013 home opener, 53-34, over visiting Wirt County Tuesday night in the RvHS Physical Education Building.

Youell led all scorers with 19 points including three treys, and her teammates put up balanced scoring with sophomore Kayla Scritchfield (trey) adding eight points, senior Melonna Carmichael (trey) seven, senior Hannah Murray (trey) and sophomore Taylor Treadway six each, sophomore Hailey Miller five and sophomore Kindsey Torris two.

The Devilettes cooled off in the middle quarters, outscoring the Lady Tigers 6-5 in the second quarter for a 28-14 half-time lead; and 9-8 in the third quarter for a 37-22 advantage headed into the final eight minutes. Both teams turned it up in the final quarter with Ravenswood taking a 16-15 scoring nudge.

Kayla Kinney paced the Lady Tigers with 12 points and Mady Hardbarger (two treys) 10. Amanda Clark added six, Taylor Watson five and Katie Leadman and Liz Adams two each.

Ravenswood grabbed a total of 43 rebounds with Hannah Murray and Taylor Treadway leading the way with nine boards each. The Devilettes dished off 11 assists with Carmichael leading the way with four and Youell and Treadway two each. They also notched 14 steals lead by Carmichael's four. Youell chipped in three swipes and Treadway, Murray and Scritchfield two each. The Devilettes committed 11 turnovers.

Ravenswood shot 33% from the floor and 25% from beyond the arc.

"I was very pleased with the effort," said Coach Williams. "As a coach, you always see things you want to improve, but the girls were excited and came out ready to play tonight. Last year, we had the tendency to play to the level of our competition. This year, we want to work hard to play well every night."

In the jayvee preliminary, Mariah Jackson's put back bucket with eight seconds left lifted Ravenswood to a 31-29 victory. Freshman Taylor Love (three treys) led all scorers with 15 points. Jackson added eight, Savana Casto (two treys) six and Dee Jinkins two.

Mady Hardbarger paced Wirt County with 10 points. Gwynn Smith and Tiffany Rhodes added six each.
