  • EASTWOOD - Williamstown thwarted No. 8 Ravenswood's second-half scoring chances and the Red Devils were denied what should have been an excellent chance to tie the game, before a goal with under seven minutes left assured that the No. 2-ranked Yellow Jackets would prevail 2-0 in the soccer sectional championship game at rainy Eastwood Thursday night.
Williamstown grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute as a defensive miscommunication cost the Red Devils.
Josh Walters headed the ball into the unguarded left side of the net off an assist from teammate Brandon Semon with 10:55 left in the first half to break a stalemate between the Class AA/A Top 10 teams who had split 1-0 decisions during the regular season. The 1-0 Williamstown advantage held at the half.
Ravenswood amped up their attack in the second half, but Williamstown led by goal keeper Garret Butler (who made a couple of laid out saves) were able to stave off the Red Devils' shots on goal.
While the Devils got some calls, the majority seemed to go Williamstown's way and the most glaring was a non-call with under eight minutes left.
Ravenswood's Nate Schiefer was knocked down in the box by a Williamstown defender over his back, but no call was made.
The result should have been a penalty kick for the Red Devils with a chance to knot the score at 1-1.
Instead, Walters struck again with 6:44 left in the game off a pass from Jarric Hoskins, getting a shot off past charging Red Devil keeper James Carmichael that went into the net just inside the left sidepost.
Senior Ravenswood scoring leader Mason Carte, who was kept in check for most of the game, got on final chance, but his angle shot was stopped by Butler with about three minutes left. As Region 4, Section 1 Champions, Williamstown (15-1-3) plays top-ranked Charleston Catholic in the Region 4 championship game today (Tuesday) at Ripley at 5:30 p.m.
Coach Todd Murray's Red Devils close out a stellar 14-6-2 season. Red Devil seniors Mason Carte, Nic Ballard, James Carmichael, Andrew Ely, Jesse Mize, Tim Eggers, Quniton Sells and Corey Pittman closed out their high school soccer careers.
