CLAY - Jordan Lucas ran for 175 yards and three touchdowns and Clay County dominated the second half Friday night as the Panthers beat Ravenswood, 33-7, extending the Red Devils' losing streak to six straight games.
Coach Mick Price's Red Devils looked to grab momentum early, but a Devon Crews' touchdown run was called back by a very late holding penalty well behind the apparent scoring play.
Instead, it was the Panthers who scored first on a 44-yard run by Lucas on the first play of the second quarter.
Once again, missed tackles by the Devils allowed the scoring run. Lucas' scoring jaunt capped a five-play, 91-yard drive, after Ravenswood again bogged down while driving for what might have been the initial score of the game. Travis Naylor booted the PAT and Clay County led 7-0 with 11:51 left in the first half.
Lucas scored again just over three minutes later on a 53-yard run again punctuated by missed Red Devil tackles. The run capped a six-play, 70-yard march. Naylor booted the PAT and the Panthers led 14-0 with 8:03 left in the half.
Ravenswood finally got untracked putting together a 13-play, 63-yard scoring drive. Rhys Jelich bolted into the end zone from seven yards out to cap the drive. Mason Carte's PAT kick sliced the Panther lead in half at 14-7 with 1:48 left in the half.
But the second half belonged to the Panthers, despite an initial surge by Ravenswood as the Red Devils came out fired up on defense.
The fire was extinguished by a 50-yard TD pass from William Stewart to Alex Burkhammer. Flushed out of the pocket to his left, Stewart lofted an wobbly pass downfield to a wide open Burkhammer. Burkhammer made a cutback move and jetted for the score.
The scoring march covered 63 yards in just five plays. Naylor's PAT kick made it 21-7 with 9:33 left in the third quarter.
Lucas scored his third TD of the game on a 22-yard run to cap a three-play, 45-yard march with 2:24 left in the third quarter. The run for two points was stopped short and Clay County led 27-7.
Richard Ahart capped the game scoring by intercepting a Heath Burgess pass and racing 55 yards for a touchdown with 8:23 left in the game. Naylor's PAT kick was wide right and the final score was 33-7.
Devon Crews led the Red Devil rushing attack with 16 carries for 80 yards. Rhys Jelich added 16 carries for 71 yards and the lone TD; Connor Jelich, eight carries for 26 yards; Preston Humphreys, one carry for 18 yards; Kaleb Horn two carries for 14 yards; and Heath Burgess, five carries for a net 15 yards. Ravenswood totaled 50 carries for 227 yards.
