  • FALLING ROCK – Ravenswood's Lady Red Devil seniors wanted one more crack at No. 1-ranked Sissonville, but it was not to be as they bowed out of the soccer post season in a stunning 4-0 shut-out to Class AA/A Region 4, Section 1 Tournament host Herbert Hoover Monday night at frigid, blustery Falling Rock. The sectional semifinal win was Hoover's first-ever post season victory.
No. 16 Ravenswood had defeated (3-2) and tied (2-2) the No. 6-ranked Lady Huskies during the regular season, but the Huskies came out aggressive and physical Monday night and the Lady Devils were on their heels from the get-go.
Despite playing the majority of the first half on their end of Joe Eddie Cawley Field, Ravenswood kept Hoover scoreless for 31 of the first 40 minutes of play.
On a night when their offense could never get in sync, the Lady Devils came scant inches from grabbing the first-half lead as junior forward Bess McNabb broke free with about 12 minutes left and drilled a shot from about 15 yards out that beat the keeper high but ricocheted of the crossbar. It was Ravenswood's best chance of the half—and as it turned out, the game.
Hoover scored with 8:31 left in the half on a extreme angle left to right shot by sophomore Cassie Hammes from about eight yards out off an assist by junior Leslie Taylor. Hoover led 1-0 at the half.
After a couple of early second half runs were unsuccessful for the Lady Devils, Hoover blew the game open with three goals on nearly identical extreme angle shots in a span of some 17 minutes.
Melody Strickland scored an unassisted goal with 34:17 left to give the Huskies a 2-0 cushion as Ravenswood's defense broke down close to the goal. Strickland scored again with 19:01 remaining off assist from Amber Williams, and Taylor scored less than two minutes (17:17 left) later to make it 4-0.
Hoover (13-5-2) advanced to play Sissonville (19-2), a 1-0 winner over St. Joseph in the second semifinal Monday, for the sectional crown last (Wednesday) night.
Ravenswood closed out a 8-9-2 campaign—and Lady Red Devil seniors Erica Cullen, Alex McNabb, Alex Vaughn, Marta Corbin, Jordan Sheets, Jordan Danko, Anna Flesher and Kassie Johnson closed out their high school soccer careers.
