By EASTWOOD – Ravenswood's Lady Red Devils grabbed an early lead, but lost 4-2 to visiting Charleston Catholic Wednesday at Eastwood in a game where calls were heavily lopsided in the Irish's favor. Yet the Devils gained confidence from their performance they hope will pay dividends as the post season approaches.
Senior Erica Cullen gave Ravenswood an early lead, driving past defender to bump in a short goal just one minute, 17 seconds into the game. The Irish were gift-wrapped a tying goal just over 10 minutes later, when officials awarded a penalty kick on a questionable call. Sophia Bumgardner drilled the kick and the game was tied at 1-1.
A second questionable penalty kick was awarded to the Irish with 13:50 left in the half, but this time Ravenswood keeper Anna Flesher got a hand on Bumgardner's kick and smothered the ball after it ricocheted off the crossbar.
The game went to the break deadlocked. Charleston Catholic grabbed a 2-1 lead with a goal just one minute, 39 seconds into the second half. But Cullen answered less than one minute later beating the Irish keeper with a 25-yard hammer shot off an assist feed from Bess McNabb for a 2-2 tie with 37:43 left in the game.
The Irish then put the game away with consecutive goals in just over one minute, getting the ball into the net past Flesher on the ground twice at the 21:43 and 20:35 marks for the 4-2 victory.
The Irish outshot the lady Devils 12-4. They scored on the only direct kick of the game. Both teams had a pair of corner kicks.
Anna Flesher had nine saves in goal for the Lady Devils. Ravenswood won 3-0 at Cross Lanes Christian, as junior Bess McNabb scored a pair of goals sandwiched around a goal by big sister, senior Alex McNabb. Senior Kassie Johnson notched an assist.
Ravenswood outshot CCC 9-8, three corner kicks to one and three direct kicks to one.
Anna Flesher recorded nine keeper saves to six for Cross Lanes Christian.
