  • ELLENBORO – Ravenswood's Red Devils (2-2) hit the road Friday night to take on a familiar foe with aspirations just as big and the same mixed results in the Ritchie County Rebels (3-2).
Coach Mick Price's Devils are trying to snap a two-game losing skid and likely spoil the Rebels' Homecoming. Ravenswood is usually Ritchie's Homecoming opponent when the teams play at Chuck Schofield Memorial Stadium.
The Rebels of Coach Mike Dawson enter Friday night's game on a two-game win streak after beating Braxton County (28-12) and Doddridge County (24-14). The Rebels dropped their season opener at St. Marys (24-15), beat Roane County at Spencer (42-20) and lost at home to Clay County (25-7) prior to winning two straight.
Ravenswood beat Roane 42-24 at Spencer and will play Braxton County next week for Homecoming and St. Marys later this season.
The Rebels have had to deal with losing five starters from last year's playoff team including LKC Defensive Player of the Year Darrenger Goff, Ryder Bolin, Cody Goff, Chazz Jones and Reno Jackson—all key defensive contributors. Jackson was the Rebels' leading rusher as well with Goff as a compliment.
Ritchie County is anchored by an experienced group of linemen including returning starters and seniors All-LKC pick Sammy Hall (6-4, 285), Trenton Hart (6-2, 235) and Casey Frederick (6-1, 235). Former Parkersburg South standout, senior Ryan Malson (6-7, 240) joins the Rebel line this year.
Dawson's philosophy for the Rebels is simple: be physical on defense and control the ball on offense.
Senior quarterback Trevor Shepler (5-11, 165) returns from a season ending injury as a junior. Alex Lipscomb (6-0, 175, Jr.) has moved from QB to wide receiver.
Jessie Hilvers (5-6, 155, Sr.) is the featured running back with Tyler Reed (5-9, 190, So.) at fullback. Dylan Frye (5-7, 135, Jr.), Jayden Alexander (6-1, 140, So.) and Bryce Powell (5-10, 205, Sr.) are prime pass targets.
Ritchie gave up 329 yards rushing in the season-opening loss to St. Marys.
Reed ran for 125 yards and scored three TDs in the win at Roane County. Shepler completed nine of 14 passes for 184 yards and two TDs.
The Rebels surrendered 286 rushing yards and four TDs in the loss to Clay County.
In the win over Braxton County, Reed scored on a 56-yard run and Shepler tossed TD passes of 45 yards to Frye and 21 yards to Alexander and ran for a two-yard TD.
In last weekend's win over Doddridge, Jones scored on a 41-yard run and Frye on a 15-yard scamper. Orlando Burgy (5-9, 180, Fr.) booted a 35-yard field goal and three PATs.
PRE-GAME NOTES: In last year's Homecoming showdown at Flinn Field. Mr. Red Devil Dustin DeRito scored four TDs as the Red Devils won a 28-7 decision in a battle of Class AA "Top 10" undefeated teams…Ravenswood owns the all-time series…Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Chuck Schofield Memorial Stadium in Ellenboro.
