LEWISBURG - Coach Kevin McClung's Ripley High golf team had to travel a grueling 150 miles to Lewisburg to compete in Region 3 competition on Monday morning.

Despite having never played the course at the Lewisburg Elks Country Club, the Vikings placed a respectable sixth out of ten teams in the field on a gorgeous day for golf in Lewisburg.

The top two finishers advance to the state tournament.

"Despite the long drive and early wake-up call my kids played admirably and were undeterred. I would have loved to see my team qualify or a least have a golfer qualify, but the reality is we must work harder and practice smarter and make a bigger commitment to getting better in the future," said McClung.

McClung is in his first year as the Viking coach and looks for a bright future for his golf program. Ripley had a mixture of both experienced and inexperienced players on the roster this season and can only benefit from the competition they faced in 2012.

Ripley shot a 255 on the day just behind Princeton's 244. Individually, Ripley were led by Junior Jacob Haynes. Haynes also stars as a sharp shooting guard for the Viking basketball squad.Ripley leaders were as follows: Jacob Haynes -79 Tyler Jones - 88, Justin McKown - 87 and Logan Reynolds - 91.
